Auralite 23 is a rare variety of Amethyst with up to 23 mineral inclusions.  It comes from small mines in the boreal forest of Canada and is similar to the Super Seven Amethysts found in Brazil.  Auralite 23’s name is a tribute to the beautiful aurora borealis, or Northern Lights, which dance across the sky above the mines during the winter.  While some metaphysical names are purely marketing grabs, Auralite 23 is a useful name from an ethical sourcing perspective since it helps identify a specific deposit.  It combines the sweet wisdom of Amethyst with many other energies, making for a complex vibration that is celebrate by crystal intuitives and healers.

The Environmental & Social Impact of Crystals

Your crystals should have a healing energy that is clean, powerful, & makes a positive difference.

Mineral Family

Auralite 23 is a essentially a variety of Amethyst which is a Tectosilicate mineral. While Amethyst is the main mineral in Auralite 23, as the name indicates there can be up to 23 distinct minerals found as inclusions within this stone. The average Auralite 23 crystal contains anywhere from 4-17 of the following minerals: Ajoite, Bornite, Cacoxenite, Chalcopyrite, Copper, Covellite, Epidote, Geothite, Gilalite, Gold, Hematite, Iron, Lepidocrosite, Limonite, Magnetite, Nickel, Platinum, Pyrite, Pyrolusite, Rutile, Sphalerite, Silver, and Titanite.

Some people may scoff at metaphysical names.  They may instead prefer to call this stone Amethyst (with inclusions), Amethyst with Hematite, etc.  From an ethical sourcing perspective, however, the name can be useful because it identifies a particular type of Amethyst at a specific location.  It is also sometimes referred to as Thunderbay Amethyst.

Auralite 23’s energy works well with its family – other Tectosilicate minerals.  Try it in combination with Citrine, Prasiolite, Quartz, Rose Quartz, Smoky Quartz, and Super Seven.

Auralite 23 Formation and Crystal Associates

Normally Amethyst is created when liquid magma from a volcanic explosion cools down and transforms into igneous rocks. During this cooling down period, silica acid bubbles shift from being a gas/liquid into a solid compound. The bubble becomes a hollow space in the igneous rock and the silica acid becomes Quartz crystals. Trace particles of iron within the silica acid gives Amethyst its purple color, otherwise the silica acid would transform into Clear Quartz. In the case of Auralite 23, additional traces of elements and minerals were floating in the silica acid and solidify within the Amethyst crystal.

Auralite 23’s energy works well with its “friends” – crystal associates formed in the same geological environment.  Try it in combination with Hematite and Rutilated Quartz.

History of Auralite 23

Auralite 23 is a true 21st century metaphysical crystal.  It comes from an Amethyst mine that opened in 2003.  The mine owner was delighted by the many different colors in his Amethyst, and named his deposit “Auralite” after the aura borealis that sometimes flickers over the mine at night.  He had his pretty crystals tested in a geology lab and learned that up to 23 mineral inclusions could be found within the Amethyst, and adjusted the name accordingly.  In 2005, the energy of this lovely stone was documented by Robert Simmons and Naisha Ahsian in The Book of Stones.

Auralite 23 is mined near Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada, a district which has long produced beautiful Amethyst and Hematite specimens.  According to some metaphysical sources, meteorites may have hit the area around Thunder Bay just prior to the crystal’s creation, thus accounting for the unusually high amount of trace metals in the crystals.  But, this claim is not backed up by any clear scientific evidence.

What is more likely, is that the crystals were created due to the volcanic activity and faulting during the Precambrian era.  These amethyst have been successfully scientifically dated to as far back as 1.2 billion years ago.  This makes them them one of the oldest gemstones available on the market. That dating means that these crystals would have formed around the same time that sexual reproduction was first documented in the fossil record, resulting in an evolutionary explosion among living creatures.
