Cavansite is a vivid blue mineral highly-prized by collectors.  The majority of specimens are from western India and are mined alongside Apophyllite and Stilbite.  It occasionally grows as small prismatic crystals, but is more likely to form as a thin plate, ball, or rosette.  It is a delicate mineral and should be kept on shelf or in a bowl, rather than carried in a pocket or medicine bag.  Energetically, Cavansite has a joyful presence, eager to help us develop our full potential.  If we feel stuck, it can help us to get out of a rut, push past a block, or otherwise break free.  It is a stone of clarity, helping us to know who we are, what we want to do, and how we can achieve our goals.

Where does Cavansite come from?

The best specimens of Cavansites come from Pune, India. Other notable deposits are located in Iceland, New Zealand, and the United States (Oregon)

Mining and Treatments

Cavansite is usually mined in its primary deposit, often as a secondary mineral in a commercial Basalt mine.  In India, where the majority of Cavansite crystals come from, the mines are in western India, near the city of Puna.  The Basalt is crushed and then used as road-making material, gravel for train tracks and other construction purposes.  Artisanal miners mine the secondary minerals found growing in the veins and cavities within the Basalt.  Many of these minerals are delicate and so must be removed using hand tools.  Cavansite is particularly delicate, both in terms of Moh’s hardness, as well as the fact that it is often just a thin plate or rosette.

All Cavansites are natural, enhanced only by tumbling, cutting, and polishing.

The Environmental & Social Impact of Crystals

Your crystals should have a healing energy that is clean, powerful, & makes a positive difference.

Mineral Family

Cavansite is a phyllosilicate mineral. Silicates are minerals which contain the elements Silicon (a light gray shiny metal) and Oxygen (a colorless gas). Together, these two elements form a tetrahedron – a shape similar to a pyramid – with a Silicon atom in the center and Oxygen atoms at each of the four corners. These tetrahedra connect with other chemical structures, in six different ways, to form various minerals and rocks. There are six main groups of Silicate minerals, and these main groups are further subdivided into secondary subdivisions, such as Quartz and Feldspar. Cavansite belongs to the phyllosilicate group, whose tetrahedra connect at three corners to form hexagonal rings.

Cavansite’s energy works well with its family – other phyllosilicate minerals.  Try it in combination with Apophyllite, Chlorite Quartz, Chrysocolla, Fuchsite, Kammererite, Lepidolite, Muscovite, Petalite, Prehnite, Seraphinite, and Serpentine

Cavansite Formation and Crystal Associates

Cavansite is a rare secondary mineral found in igneous rocks like Basalt and Andesite. It tends to remain small, usually growing as thin sheets, balls or rosettes.  It can also form lovely prismatic crystals.  It is typically bright-blue, but can also be blue-green.

Cavansite’s energy works well with its “friends” – crystal associates formed in the same geological environment.  Try it in combination with Stilbite

What is the white mineral that grows with Cavansite?

Many of the bright blue Cavansite sold on the market are found growing on top of a white mineral.  Most sellers label it simply as Stilbite, a Zeolite mineral, which can be white or pastel orange.  However, lab tests show that it is more likely to be a combination of both Stilbite and Heulandite, a closely-related but less well-known Zeolite mineral.

History of Cavansite

Cavansite is a rare crystal, first discovered in 1967.  As such, it is not included in any older lapidary, texts that describe gemstones and their powers.  Because of its rarity, Cavansite is mentioned in relatively few modern lapidaries, however it is becoming increasingly popular among metaphysical collectors.    Its name is a derivation of its chemical composition, namely calcium (CA), vanadium (VA) and sodium (NA).

The original type specimen was found at Lake Owyhee State Park in Oregon, USA.  Many of the crystals found in the park are blue-green, rather than the bright blue variety that is more commonly seen on the market.  The rock formations found in the Owyhee area are quite young, geologically speaking.  The oldest are 16 million years old, while the youngest are a mere 70,000 years old.  Each layer was created by a volcanic eruption from nearby Jordan Crater and other volcanos in the region.  The oldest eruptions occurred when the Yellowstone Hot Spot was still in eastern Oregon.  The hot spot has been steadily drifting northeast to its current location on the border of Idaho and Wyoming.  This is because the North American tectonic plate is moving to the southwest, 1 inch (2.3 centimeters) every year.

The largest known deposit of Cavansite, which also happens to produce the finest collector’s pieces, is in the Deccan Traps of India.  The Deccan Traps are a massive igneous rock province and one of the largest volcanic features on Earth.  It is composed of layer upon layer of basalt, formed by numerous lava flows over a period of about 30,000 years.

The Deccan Traps were created 65 million years ago, coinciding with the massive extinction event at the end of the Cretaceous Period.  Current scientific consensus is that the volcanic eruptions were actually caused by the Chicxulub Impact Event – a large asteroid/comet that hit North America.  The shock waves from this impact triggered earthquakes and volcanoes around the world.  The climate destruction caused by the impact itself and the resulting volcanic activity, created a sunlight-blocking global winter which killed off 75% of the earth’s species, including all non-Avian dinosaurs.
