Understanding the Chinese Lunar Year

The Chinese Calendar is a lunisolar calendar that tracks both the moon and the sun.  Every month begins on the new moon and lasts 28 days.  To keep the lunar calendar aligned with the solar seasons, New Years Day isn’t a specific day like January 1^st, but rather a floating holiday that occurs between January 21^st and February 20^th.  Chinese New Year is celebrated when the new moon is closest to the midpoint between winter solstice and the spring equinox.  For example:

• In 2024, Chinese New Year began on February 10^th
• In 2025, Chinese New Year began on January 29^th
• In 2026, Chinese New Year will begin on February 17^th

For people born on February 20^th through December 31^st your Chinese Zodiac will match the western calendar year. For people born January 1-20^th, your Chinese Zodiac will always match the year before because you were born at the end of the Chinese lunar year.  The tricky dates are for people born between January 21^st and February 19^th.  For those birthdays, you will need to look up when the new moon arrived on your specific year.
