Understanding the Chinese Lunar Year
The Chinese Calendar is a lunisolar calendar that tracks both the moon and the sun. Every month begins on the new moon and lasts 28 days. To keep the lunar calendar aligned with the solar seasons, New Years Day isn’t a specific day like January 1st, but rather a floating holiday that occurs between January 21st and February 20th. Chinese New Year is celebrated when the new moon is closest to the midpoint between winter solstice and the spring equinox. For example:
- In 2024, Chinese New Year began on February 10th
- In 2025, Chinese New Year began on January 29th
- In 2026, Chinese New Year will begin on February 17th
For people born on February 20th through December 31st your Chinese Zodiac will match the western calendar year. For people born January 1-20th, your Chinese Zodiac will always match the year before because you were born at the end of the Chinese lunar year. The tricky dates are for people born between January 21st and February 19th. For those birthdays, you will need to look up when the new moon arrived on your specific year.

Is it the Year of the Goat or the Year of the Sheep?
The Year of the Goat is sometimes called the Year of Sheep. This is because the Chinese word 羊 refers to a variety of animals in the Caprinae subfamily, which includes sheep, goats, and some antelope. In English-speaking countries, both Goat and Sheep are acceptable translations, with Goat being slightly more common.
