Understanding the Chinese Lunar Year

The Chinese Calendar is a lunisolar calendar that tracks both the moon and the sun.  Every month begins on the new moon and lasts 28 days.  To keep the lunar calendar aligned with the solar seasons, New Years Day isn’t a specific day like January 1st, but rather a floating holiday that occurs between January 21st and February 20th.  Chinese New Year is celebrated when the new moon is closest to the midpoint between winter solstice and the spring equinox.  For example:

  • In 2024, Chinese New Year began on February 10th
  • In 2025, Chinese New Year began on January 29th
  • In 2026, Chinese New Year will begin on February 17th

For people born on February 20th through December 31st your Chinese Zodiac will match the western calendar year. For people born January 1-20th, your Chinese Zodiac will always match the year before because you were born at the end of the Chinese lunar year.  The tricky dates are for people born between January 21st and February 19th.  For those birthdays, you will need to look up when the new moon arrived on your specific year.

Year of the Horse Crystals

People born in the Year of the Horse are optimistic and adventurous.  They are quick to take the initiative and have no problem taking a leap of faith.  Horses embrace the journey itself and don’t worry too much about the final destination.  They are quick to change direction whenever new information becomes available.

Horse is a Yang Sign – associated with the sun and outward flowing energy.  Horses are typically fun and charismatic.  They are quick to inspire a group to get moving and keep going, but aren’t they afraid to run alone. Crystals that resonate with the Year of the Horse embody these happy-go-lucky qualities.

Elemental Energy – What kind of Horse are you?

In the Chinese Zodiac each year resonates with one of the elements: Earth, Fire, Mental, Water, and Wood.  A Wood Horse and an Earth Horse will share many similarities, but they’ll also have a unique flair from their elemental energy.  While the crystals above are recommended for all Horses, you may also enjoy exploring crystals associated with your element.

Earth Horse– You were born in 1978.  You want your words and actions to be in alignment, so when you say you value something, you live that truth.  Working with earth energy crystals will give you the strength to run marathons and be resilient despite the miles.  Sometimes Horses will run themselves ragged, but Earth Horses know how to maintain a solid pace.  Since you were born in a year that ends in a 8, you might also enjoy exploring the numerology of the number 8.

Fire Horse– You were born in 1966 and 2026 will be a Year of the Fire Horse.  You love to go fast and leave everyone behind in your dust!  Working with fire energy crystals can help you keep your speed, but not lose sight of your loved ones.  All Fire signs and Horses can be impulsive and exciting, but Fire Horses are truly magnificent and unforgettable.  Since you were born in a year that ends in a 6, you might also enjoy exploring the numerology of the number 6.

Metal Horse– You were born in 1930 or 1990.  You are ambitious and innovative, and so you expect to win the race.  Working with metal energy crystals will help you to quickly solve complex problems.  Metals signs and horses value freedom, so its no surprise that Metal Horses will put in the work for financial freedom.

Since you were born in a year that ends in a 0, single digit numerology doesn’t apply. However, you might also enjoy exploring the numerology of 1930:  1+9+3+0= 13.  1+3 = numerology of the number 4 or the numerology of 1990: 1+9+9+0 = 19. 1+9 = 10.  1+0 = numerology of the number 1.

Water Horse– You were born in 1942 or 2002.  You are ready for anything and can pivot on a dime.  Working with water energy crystals encourages you to pause and think a little before you leap.  A Water Horse values their independence, but will always remember to take good care of their herd.  Since you were born in a year that ends in a 2, you might also enjoy exploring the numerology of the number 2.

Wood Horse– You were born in 1954 or 2014.  You are creative and deeply caring.   Working with wood energy crystals will help you to better understand those around you and how to respond to any situation.  Both wood signs and Horses are naturally creative, and Wood Horses especially delight in exploring artistic possibilities.  Since you were born in a year that ends in a 4, you might also enjoy exploring the numerology of the number 4.
