Dragonstone is a rare healing stone found only in Limpopo, South Africa.  It combines two closely related sorosilicate minerals, bright green Epidote and vivid red Piemontite.  It was first discovered near Tshipise Hotsprings, which bubbles up near a dragon-shaped hill.  This location coupled with the stone’s dramatic coloring immediately led to the nickname of Dragonstone.  Several other rocks have this same nickname, including a stone from Australia that even has the same vivid coloring, but has a different mineral composition.  Dragonstone from South Africa encourages us to be our true self and to step into our personal power.

The Environmental & Social Impact of Crystals

Your crystals should have a healing energy that is clean, powerful, & makes a positive difference.

Mineral Family

Dragonstone is a not a mineral, but rather a rock. An easy way to understand the difference is that rocks are like cookies and minerals are ingredients like flour or sugar. Many different minerals are used to create a rock! In the case of Dragonstone, it combines two closely related minerals, green Epidote and Red Piemontite, both of which are Sorosilicate mineral, a type of Silicate mineral.  Silicates are minerals which contain the elements Silicon (a light gray shiny metal) and Oxygen (a colorless gas). Together, these two elements form a tetrahedron – a shape similar to a pyramid – with a Silicon atom in the center and Oxygen atoms at each of the four corners. These tetrahedra connect with other chemical structures, in six different ways, to form various minerals and rocks. There are six main groups of Silicate minerals, and these main groups are further subdivided into secondary subdivisions, such as Quartz and Feldspar. Epidote and Piemontite both belong to the Sorosilcate family, in which two tetrahedral groups share a single oxygen molecule.

Dragonstone’s energy works well with its family – other sorosilicate minerals.  Try it in combination with Danburite, Idocrase,  Tanzanite, Thulite and Zoisite.

Dragonstone Formation and Crystal Associates

Epidote and Piemontite, the two minerals that combine to create Dragonstone, are both typically formed in metamorphic rocks such as marble. On occasion, they can be formed during hydrothermal alteration which transforms sedimentary and metamorphic rocks into igneous rocks. This more rare formation is most likely responsible for creating Dragonstone, since it is usually found near active hot springs.

Dragonstone’s energy works well with its “friends” – crystal associates formed in the same geological environment.  Try it in combination with Spessartine Garnet

History of Dragonstone

Dragonstone is a new stone for the metaphysical community, as are the two minerals which compose it, green Epidote and red Piemontite. As a result, none of them were included in early lapidaries, texts which describe stones and their powers. Dragonstone is found only in the Limpopo province of South Africa. It was first discovered near the mouth of the Tshipise Hotsprings, which is below a dragon-shaped hill, hence the name.

South African Dragonstone looks remarkably similar to Australian Dragon’s Blood Jasper, which is a green Fuchsite with Red Jasper inclusions. Despite the name and color similarities, these two stones are completely different both in mineralogy and energy. The name “Dragonstone” is also sometimes used for brown and yellow Septarian Nodules.
