The Story Behind Today's Gift

He would be the love of her life. Her heart knew that as a 17 year old bride. She knew this man was hers to have and to hold, forever and ever, amen.

And so it was and so it is. 60 years have passed since their wedding day. Some of those years were joyfully and easy, some of them were very challenging. He was a career military man who followed the water, while she kept the home fires burning and raised their son to be strong and noble, just like his father. Part of what made them such a perfect match is that they’re each so independent. They both expected to take care of themselves and they thrived in their respective roles. For about fifty years or so, that worked out beautifully. Sometimes getting old comes as a surprise.

She looks at her invincible husband. How is it possible that he’s now leashed to an oxygen tank? How did it become so hard for them to leave the house? She was always his ‘helper’ but now she’s a ‘caretaker’ and that’s an entirely different role. It’s hard. Especially during a pandemic when they’re even more isolated than they would be normally.

But deep down, she’s still a 17 year old bride. She’s still completely in love with a fearless young sailor. She’s still ready to embrace all the goodness life has to offer.

Her granddaughter misses her more than she can say. It’s the longest she’s ever gone without hugging her grandma or seeing her in person. They’ve always been so close. She talks to her grandma on the phone regularly and hears the weight of the isolation and separation. She wants her grandma to know that’s she’s love and admired. She wants to send her grandma some extra-energy to keep going. So we’re sending a little crystal hug, until a real hug is possible again.
