Epidote is a common crystal that can be found all over the world, but only a few locations have collector-quality specimens.  It is typically green or greenish-black, but it can also be red.  A rare healing crystal called Dragonstone is a striking combination of green and red Epidote.  It is often found mixed with other minerals.  One of the more well known examples is Prehnite Epidote in which pale green transparent Prehnite is pierced by dark-green Epidote needles.  In its pure form it amplifies high vibrations.  It teaches us to become our Highest Self and to make sure that our walk matches our talk and that we live with joy and peace in our heart.

Epidote Meaning

Spiritual Healing Properties

Epidote amplifies our highest vibrations, helping us to transform our lives in a multitude of ways. It teaches us to walk, talk, and think as our Highest Self. Epidote has a very loving and forgiving energy, inviting us to let go of anything that holds us back from enjoying life and living with passion and integrity. It ignites in us a passion for personal improvement, urging us to honestly assess our strengths and weakness and to pursue our dreams accordingly. Epidote is a powerful manifestation tool, as it helps to increase anything positive which already exists in our lives, whether that be love, money, or anything else that brings us Light! By raising our spiritual vibration and helping us to become more self-confident, we become the masters of our own fate and, as such, capable of great things.

Emotional Healing Properties

Epidote is a very loving and grounding stone, which gently nudges us towards a more positive internal landscape. It helps us to let go of grief, anger, exhaustion, and other “heavy” emotions. During difficult times in life, Epidote reminds us that life is a beautiful thing and that we have important and interesting roles to play in it. During more relaxed times, Epidote asks us to become more honest with ourselves. In particular, Epidote can help us to question whether our belief systems are actually true or whether we are indulging in a negative belief willfully – despite evidence to the contrary! This is especially true about feelings of self-pity or victimization. Epidote helps us to feel more positive and optimistic about the future. It reduces the power of our “inner critic” and magnifies positive perceptions and a more accurate worldview.

Mental Healing Properties

Epidote is extremely helpful for teaching us to think more carefully and to not indulge in negativity. It reminds us that sarcasm, hardcore “realism,” and judgmental attitudes are often a cover for a lack of self-confidence or a belief that the world cannot be improved. As we grow in self-confidence we also grow kinder and more open-minded, able to imagine how a better world might be created. Epidote helps us recognize that “impossible” things happen every day, and that they result from hard work, patient endurance, and a willingness to try again despite mistakes and failures.  It makes a wonderful talisman for inventors, scientists, and artists – especially those on the cutting-edge of their fields.

Physical Healing Properties

Epidote is widely used by metaphysical healers to support general physical regeneration and bring the body into its most balanced and vibrant state. It is believed to reduce cysts and tumors, as well as assisting in weight loss, because Epidote transforms “heavy” vibrations into light ones, and to help us to change the emotional patterns that negatively affect our physical health. Epidote is said to strengthen the immune system and the nervous system. It is also used to increase hydration, smooth skin, and help hair and nails to grow longer and stronger.

Epidote Mineralogy

Where does Epidote come from?

Epidote is typically found inside metamorphic rocks such as marble. Most of the time the Epidote is low-grade quality, but occasionally gem-quality crystals are found, particularly in Austria and Pakistan.

Mining and Treatments

Epidote occurs widely in low-grade qualities. High quality deposits are located in Austria, Brazil, Canada, France, Mozambique, Myanmar, Norway, Pakistan, Peru, and the United States (Alaska, California, and Colorado).

All Epidotes are fully natural and have been enhanced only by tumbling, cutting, and polishing.

The Environmental & Social Impact of Crystals

Your crystals should have a healing energy that is clean, powerful, & makes a positive difference.

Mineral Family

Epidote is a Sorosilcate mineral.  Silicates are minerals which contain the elements Silicon (a light gray shiny metal) and Oxygen (a colorless gas). Together, these two elements form a tetrahedron – a shape similar to a pyramid – with a Silicon atom in the center and Oxygen atoms at each of the four corners. These tetrahedra connect with other chemical structures, in six different ways, to form various minerals and rocks. There are six main groups of Silicate minerals, and these main groups are further subdivided into secondary subdivisions, such as Quartz and Feldspar. Epidote belongs to the sorosilcate family, in which two tetrahedral groups share a single oxygen molecule. Epidote is the most abundant mineral in this family.

Epidote’s energy works well with its family – other sorosilicate minerals.  Try it in combination with Danburite, Dragonstone, Idocrase, Tanzanite, Thulite and Zoisite

Epidote Formation and Crystal Associates

Epidote is typically formed in metamorphic rocks such as marble. On occasion, they can be formed during hydrothermal alteration which transforms sedimentary and metamorphic rocks into igneous rocks.

Epidote’s energy works well with its “friends” – crystal associates formed in the same geological environment.  Try it in combination with Diopside, Prehnite

History of Epidote

Epidote is a relatively “new” crystal to the metaphysical community and so was not included in any ancient or medieval lapidaries, texts that describe crystals and their powers. It was first documented in 1801 by the emminent mineralogist, René Just Haüy (1743-1822), the “Father of Crystallography.” He gave this green stone the name Epidote, from the Greek word “epidosis” (to increase), because its crystals are longer on one side than on the other, giving it a perfect cleavage from one angle, but a very poor one from another angle.

Epiodote is closely related to a red stone called Piemontite. In South Africa, these two minerals combine together to create a very unique and rare green rock with red spots called Dragonstone. More commonly, green Epidote is joined with red Feldspar, to create a green rock with salmon-pink spots called Unakite.
