Healing Properties of Dendritic Agate
Spiritual: Dendritic Agate brings a spiritual awareness to everyday life. It helps us to see our place within the Divine Plan and to walk our spiritual path with joy and courage. Dendritic Agate helps us stay grounded, balanced and connected to our own natural world as well as the larger universe. It is a stone of abundance and gratitude. Dendritic Agate is attuned to the Root Chakra and helps to align/balance all the chakras; and it is linked to the astrological sign of Gemini. It is connected to the element of Earth and vibrates to the number 3 and 7.
Emotional: Dendritic Agate is a gentle stone which can show us how to best use our energy, especially when dealing with stressful or complicated situations. It also helps us to release addictions and obsessions which do not serve us. Dendritic Agate reveals the truth of who we are to ourselves, thus allowing us to let go of shame, envy, guilt, victim mentality and other negative emotions. Where these negative beliefs used to be, Dendritic Agate helps us to develop a healthy sense of our true worth and value. It can also helps us better connect to our family and other loved ones.
Mental: Dendritic Agate unites logic with intuition, allowing us to walk through life with grace and prosperity. It help us to see more clearly the line between what is actually true, and what we simply fear or want to believe is true. Dendritic Agate is a particularly good stone for anyone working in agriculture or botany as it helps us to clearly communicate with plants and nature spirits.
Physical: Dendritic Agate is most often used by metaphysical healers to reduce physical tension and pain caused by stress and infections. It is said to be particularly good for back/shoulder muscles and for the skeletal system. It is also believed to help keep the capillaries, fine blood vessels, in good working order. Dendritic Agate is also used to treat Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

Mineral Family: Dendritic Agate is a Silicate mineral. Agate is a tiny twig on a far off branch of the crystal tree. Silicate minerals form the largest family of minerals, including more than 25% of all known minerals and 40% of all common minerals. In addition to being a major part of the Earth’s crust, Silicate minerals have also been found on the moon and in meteorites. Silicates are minerals which contain the elements Silicon (a light gray shiny metal) and Oxygen (a colorless gas). Together, these two elements form a tetrahedron – a shape similar to a pyramid – with a Silicon atom in the center and Oxygen atoms at each of the four corners. These tetrahedra connect with other chemical structures, in six different ways, to form various minerals and rocks. There are six main groups of Silicate minerals, and these main groups are further subdivided into secondary subdivisions, such as Quartz and Feldspar. Quartz is a large mineral family in its own right, and has two main subdivisions, macrocrystalline (crystals that are large enough to be seen by the naked eye, for example, Amethyst) and microcrystalline (crystals so small they can only be seen through a microscope, for example, Agate). All microcrystalline Quartz fall under the subcategory of Chalcedony, which is then further subdivided. One of these categories is Agate. Dendritic Agate is a type of agate which is colorless with inclusions of iron and manganese which can manifest in a wide variety of colors.
Formation: Dendritic Agate is created when liquid magma from a volcanic explosion cools down and transforms into igneous rocks. During this cooling down period, silica acid bubbles shift from being a gas/liquid into a solid compound. The bubble becomes a hollow space in the igneous rock and the silica acid becomes Quartz crystals. Agates are formed when thin sheets of Quartz are layered with other minerals, creating a wide variety of colors and patterns.
Mining: Agates are the primary product of numerous mines worldwide. Typically, Agates are found in their primary deposits and still have their original relationship with the host rock. Agates are usually ball or almond-shaped nodules ranging in size from a fraction of an inch to several yards in diameter. If the Agate fills the entire hollow space left by the gas bubble, it is called an Agate Almond. If a hollow remains in the center, it is called an Agate Geode.
Enhancements: Lab created Agates are rare, while dyed Agates are extremely common. Dendritic Agates are fully natural, enhanced only by tumbling, cutting and polishing.
History of Dendritic Agate
Dendritic Agate is a relatively “new” healing stone whose properties have only recently begun to be explored. As a result, it was not included in early lapidaries, texts which describe gemstones and their powers. However, many other types of Agate have rich histories. It is certainly possible that Dendritic Agate may have used by indigenous cultures for ornaments as well as for healing and spiritual purposes.

This stone was originally sold as “Merlinite”, which is a type of Dendritic Agate. The name Merlinite is typically reserved for stones found in specific mines in New Mexico and Cornwall, UK.
I have been doing business with this source since 2014. They are the oldest tumbling company in the world and have more varieties, in more sizes, than any other known source. The company started in California in the 1950s and was eventually bought by a British immigrant who had young sons. Eventually the company moved to South Africa in order to be closer to the source of their best-selling stone and to have the legal rights to export it. The company is now run by the sons and their childhood best friend.
The current owners visit many small and industrial-size mines personally. For artisanal-mined deposits in sub-Sahara Africa, the owners work with Gem Dealers who deal directly with the part-time miners. The majority of these Gem Dealers are women. Some, but not all, of their stones are labeled with country-of-origin. For those that aren’t, I ask the owners directly. As I’ve learned more about mining practices in individual countries, I have become increasingly selective about what I will purchase from them. However, they remain my preferred source for most of the stones I sell from sub-Sahara Africa.
