Supply Chain for Tumbled Almandine Garnet

This Almandine Garnet comes from artisanal miners in Odisha, India. Artisanal mining for garnets typically has a low environmental impact and is relatively low risk for miners.

This lapidary hand-polishes stones in Mumbai, India. It is owned by two long-time friends and business partners. Unusual for India, factory workers have safe conditions and are paid fairly. It is also an exporter and sells exclusively at large gem shows.

I first met this source at the 2017 Denver Gem Show. Our first encounter was short since it was my last day of shopping and I had already spent most of my budget, but their polished stock was the highest quality I had ever seen. A few months later, we met again in Tucson and this time I made sure to visit them at the beginning of the show!

In 2019, I was able to sit down with both owners and have a lengthy conversation about sourcing. Unlike most lapidaries, they were willing to speak with me in-depth about how they ensure their business is ethical. We talked about individual mines in India as well as how they source from other countries. We also talked about how they treat their own workers and about the links between business, karma, and God. Their willingness to talk and their pleasure at the conversation made me eager to develop and deepen this relationship.

Almandine Garnet is the most common variety of Garnet and the birthstone for the month of January.  While other varieties come in a range of colors, Almandine are always a deep red or reddish-purple color, that is typically much darker than Ruby and other red jewels.  Garnet’s name is from the Latin word for seed, a reference to pomegranate because garnets are often found clustered together just like pomegranate seeds. Almandine Garnet has a wonderful energy that is both passionate and peaceful, a curious balance that can teach us a unique kind of freedom.  It invites us to follow our heart’s desires, while also be practical and pragmatic. What a big, vibrant faceted Almandine Garnet this is. I love the fires in it, deep red in some lights and in others sparks of scarlet and rainbow brilliance. This Garnet seems to say, “My strength has unfathomable depths. Let me share it with you.”
