Supply Chain for Baltic Amber

This Amber comes from artisanal miners in Ukraine.  Much of the mining is done by searching beaches and using pipes, nets and flashlights.  It has the lowest environmental impact and is the lowest risk for miners.

This polisher specializes in crafting Amber jewelry.  The company is located in the coastal town of Palanga, Lithuania on the Baltic Sea.  Its main product lines showcase Baltic Amber, which can come from a variety of countries in northern Europe. The company also works with green and blue Amber from the Caribbean.

I first encountered this supplier at the 2023 Denver Gem Show.  My previous supplier from Poland had retired and so I was on the lookout for a new supply chain for Baltic Amber.  My attention was caught by some beautiful Amber jewelry from Lithuania.  I spoke with the owner and learned he had a polishing factory in a coastal town on the Baltic Sea that employees many craftsman, some of whom come from families that have worked Amber for generations.  After I selected some Amber to purchase, I asked him how the war between Ukraine and Russia was impacting the Baltic Amber trade and he told me about some of the difficulties they were facing.  In fact, some of the Amber I selected was mined in Ukraine.  At that point, he was speaking in a carefully politically-neutral tone, which is usually best in business.  So I asked if Lithuania was on Ukraine’s side.  I already knew how the country stood officially, but it’s always interesting to talk with real people.  All neutrality was set aside, as he declared they were “100% on Ukraine’s side.”  I laughed and told him “me too,” then we shook hands and made our first business deal.

Baltic Amber Healing, Mineralogy, and History

Published December 2015  •  Updated August 2024 •  Read Time: 13 minutes
People have loved Amber since time immortal and have written about its healing properties for thousands of years.  It is an extremely light-weight and soft gemstone, that is easy to carve and can even float in water!  On the Baltic coast, it washes up on beaches after a heavy storm, making it easy to gather and trade.  While most stones feel cold to the touch, this lovely gem often feels warm or room-temperature.  Amber is an organic gemstone created by a biological process, instead of a geological one.  It is fossilized tree resin.  Each deposit dates back to a different time period, sometimes relatively recent and other times many millions of years old.  Energetically it’s a bright and happy little stone eager to share luck and goodwill.
