Supply Chain for Apache Tear Obsidian

This Apache Tear Obsidian comes from artisanal miners in Superior, Arizona.  It is hand-gathered in the area surrounding the now-closed Apache Tear Mine.  All of these pieces were found loose on the ground.  It has the lowest environmental impact and is the lowest risk for miners.

This gem dealer is an American couple that prospects for stones while hiking in Arizona. The wife sells their stones online to bring in some extra cash.

I originally had another source for rough Apache Tear Obsidian, but I wanted to find something closer to the source, with less middlemen involved. Due to COVID-19, I was unable to keep Apache Tear Obsidian in stock.

In the spring of 2021, I was completely sold out of Apache Tear Obsidian, both rough and polished, when a young woman contacted me during a time of intense grief. Her best friend had unexpectedly died and she was very worried about her friend’s boyfriend. I advised her to get an Apache Tear Obsidian for him, but had none to offer her. This felt completely unacceptable to me, so I decided that all other work tasks needed to be paused and that I would devote my full time and energy to finding a new Apache Tear Obsidian source. I was able to contact her soon after, to tell her I had found a new source. She immediately purchased an Apache Tear for her friend’s boyfriend. I sent two Apache Tears, one for the boyfriend and one for her.

As always, ethical sourcing was at the forefront of my mind when I was searching for a new supplier. I am very pleased to have found a direct supplier and I hope to continue to do business with them for many years to come.

Apache Tear Obsidian Healing, Mineralogy, and History

Published May 2014  •  Updated August 2024  •  Read Time: 8 minutes
Apache Tear Obsidian are Black Obsidian nuggets that are found only in the historical territory of the Apache Tribe, in the American Southwest and Northern Mexico.  When polished the are often translucent, similar to a Smoky Quartz.  According to legend, these little gems were created following a great tragedy during the Apache Wars (1849-1886) between the Tribe and the United States.  Today, they are considered the most powerful healing stones for grief and mourning.  Energetically they are exceptionally comforting and validating, giving us all the time we need to heal (if possible) or to adjust (if necessary) to life with a broken heart. I ordered an apache tear and a lavender quartz. I received a garnierite by mistake. She was wonderful with shipping out the correct crystals quickly. Wonderful customer service and the rock I received by mistake resonates with me perfectly. It has a fantastic energy that I find happy. I think it came to me on purpose. Thank you Julie.

I just opened your stunning package a bit ago. What a gift! I cannot wait to try the tea, and the meaning behind it is so perfect. Your description of the stones’ uses spoke directly to my heart. And I love your thought-provoking questions, inviting ongoing contemplation. The Obsidian Apache Tears themselves are so beautiful, and not what I was expecting. I thought they would be larger, opaque, flat/matte black, and rougher. I guess I thought they would be as heavy and dark as grief itself. They certainly have strength and power, as well as the beautiful, gentle and natural shapes — including perfect globes. And I am most surprised by the translucency. I think there is a hint of purple in there, shone in the bit of light allowed through, and it makes me wonder if there is a hint of heavenly connection (7th chakra) in this deeply grounding stone, and that that connection is part of processing and letting go.
