Ethical Sourcing Requires Transparency

Supply Chain for Auralite 23

When we know better, we do better. Ethical sourcing is a constantly evolving process. If the original sourcing for the stone still passes Moonrise Crystals’ current standards, it will be restocked as soon as possible. If the original sourcing is no longer acceptable, it will be restocked when/if a better supplier can be found.

This Auralite 23 comes from the family-owned Auralite 23 mine in Thunder Bay, Canada.  Canada is one of the few countries that has adopted environmentally-friendly and sustainable mining practices. Canada has one of the safest mining standards in the world.

This supplier owns and operates a small-scale mine in Thunder Bay, Canada.  The mine is worked by the family and summer staff using small machinery and hand tools.  It only produces Auralite 23 and takes environmental concerns very seriously.

I had previously carried Auralite 23 from another source.  At the 2020 Tucson Gem Show I had the great pleasure of meeting the owner of the Auralite 23 mine.  His eight-year-old daughter immediately took charge of me and showed me all of their Auralites.  After getting the full tour, I asked if they had anything tumbled and she showed me both tumbled stones and cabachons.  She then declared that the cabachons are better and offered to help me pick out the best ones.  This little girl was born the same year the mine opened, she IS Auralite 23.

After all the stones were picked through, the father and I had a long talk.  I told him how rare it is to see a mine that advertises itself as “ethical” and asked him to elaborate.  He told me all about their mining processes, from the seasons they work and the equipment they use, to how they monitor the brook trout, which are an environmentally-sensitive species.  I asked him about choosing the Chinese lapidary and we discussed the pros and cons and the complexities of the industry.  We spoke of religious beliefs and divine paths.  We took each other’s measure and liked what we saw.  When we were done talking, the little girl presented me with an Auralite 23 mandala because “we give crystals to the people we like.”

Auralite 23 Healing, Mineralogy, and History

Published September 2016  •  Updated August 2024  •  Read Time: 7 minutes
Auralite 23 is a rare variety of Amethyst with up to 23 mineral inclusions.  It comes from small mines in the boreal forest of Canada and is similar to the Super Seven Amethysts found in Brazil.  Auralite 23’s name is a tribute to the beautiful aurora borealis, or Northern Lights, which dance across the sky above the mines during the winter.  While some metaphysical names are purely marketing grabs, Auralite 23 is a useful name from an ethical sourcing perspective since it helps identify a specific deposit.  It combines the sweet wisdom of Amethyst with many other energies, making for a complex vibration that is celebrate by crystal intuitives and healers.
