Mineral Family: Green Aventurine is a type of Quartz, which is in turn a Silicate mineral. Silicate minerals form the largest family of minerals, including more than 25% of all known minerals and 40% of all common minerals. In addition to being a major part of the Earth’s crust, Silicate minerals have also been found on the moon and in meteorites. Silicates are minerals which contain the elements Silicon (a light gray shiny metal) and Oxygen (a colorless gas). Together, these two elements form a tetrahedron – a shape similar to a pyramid – with a Silicon atom in the center and Oxygen atoms at each of the four corners. These tetrahedra connect with other chemical structures, in six different ways, to form various minerals and rocks. There are six main groups of Silicate minerals, and these main groups are further subdivided into secondary subdivisions, such as Quartz and Feldspar. Quartz is a large mineral family in its own right, and has two main subdivisions, macrocrystalline (crystals that are large enough to be seen by the naked eye, for example, Amethyst) and microcrystalline (crystals so small they can only be seen through a microscope, for example, Agate). Aventurine is one of these macrocrystalline Quartzes. It is most commonly green, but may also be blue, orangepink, red, white, or yellow.

Formation: Aventurine is created when liquid magma from a volcanic explosion cools down and transforms into igneous rock. During this cooling down period, silica acid bubbles shift from being a gas/liquid into a solid compound. The bubble becomes a hollow space in the igneous rock and the silica acid becomes Quartz crystals. Trace particles of Iron and Fuchsite (chromium mica) within the silica acid gives Green Aventurine its color and sparkle.

Mining: Typically mined from the primary deposits which still have their original relationship with the host rock. They are typically found as companion stones in commercial mines for various colored Quartzes, Calcite, and other gemstones.

Enhancements: All Aventurines on the market are natural, enhanced only by tumbling, cutting, and polishing.

History of Green Aventurine

All colors of Aventurine may be considered relatively “new” healing stones whose properties have only recently begun to be explored. Aventurine was not included as a distinct mineral in most early lapidaries, texts which describe gemstones and their powers.

According to one modern lapidary, ancient Tibetan statues were often decorated with Aventurine, particularly for the eyes. Supposedly, this was to symbolically increase the statue’s visionary powers; whether this is a historically accurate statement or not is less clear.

The one thing we absolutely know about the history of Aventurine is how it got its name. It comes from the Italian a ventura, meaning “by chance.” The name actually refers to the 18th century discovery of Goldstone, a man-made sparkly glass, which is usually golden-orange or blue-purple. Goldstone has a distinctive sparkle. Natural Aventurine also sparkles, although less uniformly.

One of the ways that geologists identify stones is by their luster, or how light reflects off a stone. For example, Quartz has a Vitreous (like glass) luster, while Hematite has a Metallic luster, and Jade has a Waxy luster. A few stones have very special lusters, like Tigers Eye’s chatoyancy luster with is luminous moving bands and Labradorite’s iridescent luster (schiller effect) with its bright flashing colors.

On other special luster is “aventurescent” – the official term for stones that sparkle and glitter. Only two natural gemstones have this quality. Aventurine and Sunstone.

Sourcing Relationship

I first met the owner of the lapidary in 2014 at the Gem and Mineral show in Tucson, Arizona.  It was my first buying trip for my own store and I was nervous.  Most lapidary owners were brisk and impatient with my questions, especially when I asked about the mines and the supply chains.   But one man stood out to me as particularly patient and kind.  He had been a whole-seller for over twenty years, yet he was happy to meet someone brand-new to the industry.

He took time to talk to me about the stones.  They came from his home country of India and he was able to tell me exactly which state or territory each one came from and some of the conditions at the individual mines.  When I told him that I wanted to source ethically, he said that it would be difficult, but that it was worthwhile challenge.  He made me feel like I could succeed, both at ethical sourcing and at being a business woman.

I looked forward to a long business relationship with him.  He died, unexpectedly, in 2016.

I stayed in touch with his family and in 2017 met his wife, teenage daughter, and his father.  This three-generation family has picked up the pieces and learned how to run the business.  The wife had never worked before, but she has gracefully stepped into her new role as a business owner.  Her father-in-law offers practical and moral support, but makes sure that everyone knows that SHE is the boss and that checks should be written directly to her.  The family continues to be supportive of my efforts to ethically source.  More than any other lapidary, they are willing to speak openly with me about the difficult parts of the industry.  They have invited me to visit them in India, to visit the mines and their lapidary.  The daughter is now a GIA (Gemological Institute of America) Graduate and is interested in reiki and other healing modalities.  As she has grown up, she has become increasingly concerned about ethical issues.  The wife, the daughter and I are in active conversation about how we can support each other so that their supply chain becomes more ethical.
