Healing Properties of Orange Aventurine

Spiritual: Orange Aventurine has a very merry energy full of mischief and laughter.  It invites us to lighten up and to remember that it’s just as important to play hard as it is to work hard.  Orange Aventurine encourages us to stay present in the moment and to respond to what is actually happening around us, rather than getting lost in the past or distracted by future possibilities.  It is a wonderful crystal friend for exploring sensual spiritual experiences, for example, communing with the Divine through good cooking or finding enlightenment in the scent of a flower.  Orange Aventurine is attuned to the Sacral and Heart Chakras and linked to the astrological sign of Aries. It is connected to the elements of Fire and Water and vibrates to the number 3.

Emotional: Orange Aventurine sings of the exquisite delight of being alive.  It invites us to be happy, relax and to celebrate all the wonders around us.  Moreover, it encourages us to share those good vibes with everyone we meet.  Orange Aventurine inspires long-term friendships which bless each individual.  It also pushes us to make each short-term encounter, a pleasant one that can be remembered fondly in years to come.  Orange Aventurine asks us to be more conscientious of our impact on others, specifically for how we raise or lower the vibration.  It teaches us that having a high vibration is less to do with circumstances and more to do with emotional habits.  Orange Aventurine reminds us that it’s not someone else’s job to make life pleasant for us.  We have the responsibility to make our own life as pleasant as possible and to prioritize joyful celebrations.  Being pleasant is a habit and an attribute that we can develop to dramatically improve our own life and the lives of those around us.

Mental: Orange Aventurine is brimming with confidence and asks us to have more faith in ourselves and in the world.  It reminds that we are capable of great things.  If we feel like we are stuck in a rut or caged in, Orange Aventurine can help us to break free.  It asks us to believe that a better life is possible and then asks us if we’re willing to do the work to make it happen.  If the work feels daunting, Orange Aventurine teases us until we stop taking everything so seriously.  It reminds us that we can’t do “all of it”, all at once anyway, so there’s no need to get overwhelmed by the big picture.  All we need to do is take it one step right now and to concentrate on whatever tasks belong to the present moment.  Orange Aventurine promises us that if we diligently take it one step at a time, we’ll soon find ourselves traveling far and wide and having fun.

Physical: Orange Aventurine is recommended for anyone living a stressful life by choice, rather than by circumstance.  It asks us to notice our habits, specifically how we spend our time.  Do we make time for time-sensitive work project, but neglect time-sensitive family activities?  Do we spend hours watching the news or scrolling on social media, but never have time to read a fun novel or go for a walk?  Do we gripe about problems endlessly, but never do anything productive to solve them?  Orange Aventurine will call us out like a good friend and help us to realign.  It pushes us to reduce unnecessary stress and to take more time for pleasure.  It reminds us that relaxing and laughing are good medicine for anything that ails us.

Always use wisdom when considering crystal therapies for healing.

Mineral Family: Orange Aventurine is a type of Quartz, which is in turn a Silicate mineral. Silicate minerals form the largest family of minerals, including more than 25% of all known minerals and 40% of all common minerals. In addition to being a major part of the Earth’s crust, Silicate minerals have also been found on the moon and in meteorites. Silicates are minerals which contain the elements Silicon (a light gray shiny metal) and Oxygen (a colorless gas). Together, these two elements form a tetrahedron – a shape similar to a pyramid – with a Silicon atom in the center and Oxygen atoms at each of the four corners. These tetrahedra connect with other chemical structures, in six different ways, to form various minerals and rocks. There are six main groups of Silicate minerals, and these main groups are further subdivided into secondary subdivisions, such as Quartz and Feldspar. Quartz is a large mineral family in its own right, and has two main subdivisions, macrocrystalline (crystals that are large enough to be seen by the naked eye, for example, Amethyst) and microcrystalline (crystals so small they can only be seen through a microscope, for example, Agate). Aventurine is one of these macrocrystalline Quartzes. It is most commonly green, but may also be blue, orange, pink, red, or white.

Formation: Aventurine is created when liquid magma from a volcanic explosion cools down and transforms into igneous rocks. During this cooling down period, silica acid bubbles shift from being a gas/liquid into a solid compound. The bubble becomes a hollow space in the igneous rock and the silica acid becomes Quartz crystals. Trace particles of Iron and Fuchsite (chromium mica) within the silica acid give Orange Aventurine its color and sparkle.

Mining: Typically mined from the primary deposits which still have their original relationship with the host rock. They are typically found as companion stones in commercial mines for various colored Quartz, Calcite, and other gemstones.  They may also be found in or near commercial Iron mines alongside Hematite and Goethite

Enhancements: All Aventurines on the market are natural, enhanced only by tumbling, cutting, and polishing.

History of Orange Aventurine

All colors of Aventurine may be considered relatively “new” healing stones whose properties have only recently begun to be explored. Aventurine was not included as a distinct mineral in most early lapidaries, texts which describe gemstones and their powers.  According to one modern lapidary, ancient Tibetan statues were often decorated with Aventurine, particularly for the eyes. Supposedly, this was to symbolically increase the statue’s visionary powers; whether this is a historically accurate statement or not is less clear.

The one thing we absolutely know about the history of Aventurine is how it got its name. It comes from the Italian a ventura, meaning “by chance.” The name actually refers to the 18th century discovery of Goldstone, a man-made sparkly glass, which is usually golden-orange or blue-purple. Goldstone has a distinctive sparkle. Natural Aventurine also sparkles, although less uniformly.

One of the ways that geologists identify stones is by their luster, or how light reflects off a stone. For example, Quartz has a Vitreous (like glass) luster, while Hematite has a Metallic luster, and Jade has a Waxy luster. A few stones have very special lusters, like Tigers Eye’s chatoyancy luster with is luminous moving bands and Labradorite’s iridescent luster (schiller effect) with its bright flashing colors.

On other special luster is “aventurescent” – the official term for stones that sparkle and glitter. Only two natural gemstones have this quality. Aventurine and Sunstone.

Sourcing Relationship

I first met the owner of the Hong Kong tumbling company at the 2014 Tucson Gem and Mineral Show.  A language barrier coupled with the quick pace of the gem show, makes it difficult to discuss sensitive or complicated topics.  Every year I speak with the owner, often asking questions about the same stones, but getting slightly different answers.  The communication problem makes me highly selective about which stones I will buy from her.  If the stone is from mainland China, and I can independently determine its likely mining origin, I will buy it since short supply chains are important.  If a stone is from another country, I am more cautious.

  1. Beth S. (Kentucky)

Everything about the Orange Aventurine is charming and happy. It makes me smile to look at it and it makes me smile to hold it. Though I have Red and Yellow Aventurine this one doesn’t seem the least bit redundant. It does seem to combine some of the qualities of these two colors interestingly, with an uplifting happiness like the yellow variety but more grounded and available as physical energy like the red variety. I love it!
