I received my Azurite yesterday and I am quite pleased with it. It's very Azuritey, and possesses the requested extreme level of blueness and massive concentration of wizardicity. It's a very nice addition to both my collection of blue things and of copper based minerals (which overlap fairly frequently.)

Supply Chain for Tumbled Azurite

This Azurite comes from a small mine in Bou Beker, Morocco. The mining has a low environmental impact and is relatively safe for miners.

This mine and lapidary is a family business in Morocco. The owner of the mine polishes some of his stock and leaves the rest rough. The business is also an exporter and sells exclusively at large gem shows.

I first met the owner of the mine and lapidary at the 2017 Tucson Gem Show. Most of his stones were rough, rather than polished, but what caught my eye was his beautifully polished Selenite which came in a variety of shapes and colors. I asked him to tell me about his business and he proudly told me that he had built the business up from nothing 20 years ago and his sons will inherit it when he is ready to retire. We talked together about the importance of buying directly from the miners rather than middlemen, whenever possible.

In 2022, he greeted me as “sister!” and when I asked him about a certain mineral, he only had larger pieces available. When I said I needed smaller sizes, he told me it would be no problem and grabbed a hammer. A few minutes later, I had the sizes I needed.

Azurite Healing, Mineralogy, and History

Azurite is a semi-precious gemstone with a brilliant blue color like the sky over the desert or on a winter’s day.  It is rare secondary copper mineral created by the weathering of ore deposits.  It most often forms as a massive opaque mineral, but it can also form beautiful prismatic crystals.  Azurite’s history dates far back into antiquity as a source for copper ore, medicine, jewelry, and as pigment for blue paint.  Azurite is intimately entwined with art history and was the most common source for blue paint in medieval and Renaissance paintings.  This beautiful mineral has also been considering a healing stone for thousands of years.  Pliny the Elder describes it in Natural History as a medicine for hair and eyelashes.  In modern crystal healing, Azurite is a stone of wisdom and truth.  Its energy will benefit anyone who hungers for justice or seeks deep emotional healing.
