Blue Topaz from Finland

This Blue Topaz was surface-collected in central Finland by Varpu, a Finnish prospector.  The Topaz comes from a dump piles of an old feldspar quarry that closed more than 60 years ago.  The quarry land is privately owned and the prospector paid the landowner a fee to go through the piles. This type of mining has the lowest environmental impact and is the lowest risk for miners.

This woman-owned company is owned by a Finnish prospector.  She runs a small one-man wholesale business.  She mainly prospects in Finland, but occasionally explores other parts of Europe such as Italy.  When I first met her she only had rough stones to sell but she hoped to start polishing in the near future.

I met this source online in 2022.  The pandemic had come to an end and I was focused on meeting suppliers in person.  She had just launched her business and sent an email to me because our ethical standards align.  She surface-collects, rather than digs, so the environmental impact from her mining is almost non-existent.  I told her the sizes and quality I like for my shop and to please show me anything she had that would be a match.

Female Miner Icon ethical crystal standards

Women miners face the same workplace dangers as male miners, but have many additional challenges.  The mining industry has some of the highest rates of sexual harassment as well as one of the largest gender pay gaps.  In many countries there are superstitions that it is “bad luck” for women to work underground.

Nevertheless, women continue to mine.  In some rural areas, mining may even be the most profitable way for women to earn an income to support themselves and their families.  All of our women-mined crystals come from sources that focus on safety and economic empowerment. Learn more

Published February 2014  •  Updated February 2024  •  Read Time: 7 minutes
Blue Topaz is one of the most popular modern gemstones.  But for most of history, the word “Topaz” was used to describe the yellow-orange variety.  While the gems can be naturally blue, a vivid blue is very rare.  Most of the time, the Topaz is a pale icy blue, rather than a brilliant sky-blue.  The bright Blue Topaz that is commonly sold at jewelry stores has actually be heat treated and irradiated.  Natural Blue Topaz is can teach us to be confident and have greater self-love.  It reminds us that who we are on the inside, is more important than how we are appear on the outside.  It invites us to be honest about our dreams and to work to make them a reality.
