Ethically Sourced

Bumblebee Jasper from Indonesia

When we know better, we do better. Ethical sourcing is a constantly evolving process. If the original sourcing for the stone still passes Moonrise Crystals’ current standards, it will be restocked as soon as possible. If the original sourcing is no longer acceptable, it will be restocked when/if a better supplier can be found.

This Bumblebee Jasper comes from artisanal miners on Mount Papandayan, West Java, Indonesia.  Bumblebee Jasper includes Sulphur, but it is not as dangerous to mine as the pure Sulphur mined in East Java.

This lapidary hand-polishes stones in Mumbai, India. It is owned by two long-time friends and business partners. Unusual for India, factory workers have safe conditions and are paid fairly. It is also an exporter and sells exclusively at large gem shows.

I first met this source at the 2017 Denver Gem Show. Our first encounter was short since it was my last day of shopping and I had already spent most of my budget, but their polished stock was the highest quality I had ever seen. A few months later, we met again in Tucson and this time I made sure to visit them at the beginning of the show!

In 2019, I was able to sit down with both owners and have a lengthy conversation about sourcing. Unlike most lapidaries, they were willing to speak with me in-depth about how they ensure their business is ethical. We talked about individual mines in India as well as how they source from other countries. We also talked about how they treat their own workers and about the links between business, karma, and God. Their willingness to talk and their pleasure at the conversation made me eager to develop and deepen this relationship.

Bumblebee Jasper Healing, Mineralogy, and History

Published September 2016  •  Updated February 2024  •  Read Time: 7 minutes
Bumblebee Jasper is a sedimentary rock that is bright yellow-orange and black.  While many sellers assume the yellow-orange part is sulfur, it’s actually Realgar, a fascinating mineral in its own right.  Bumblebee Jasper is found only in Indonesia and is formed on an active volcano.  It has a happy and empowering energy that helps us to make big changes in our life.  It teases us to strike the word “impossible” from our vocabulary and instead be very curious about what might truly be possible.  When its time to “work the problem” rather than be sad about a problem, Bumblebee Jasper is eager to help you jump into action.
