Supply Chain for Cavansite

This Cavansite comes from artisanal miners in Mahrashtra, India.  It is a byproduct of basalt mining in the area which produces gravel for India’s railroad tracks.  The Apophyllite is mined in surface pits, using hand tools and possibly some light machinery. It is relatively low risk for miners.

This lapidary hand-polishes stones in Mumbai, India. It is owned by two long-time friends and business partners. Unusual for India, factory workers have safe conditions and are paid fairly. It is also an exporter and sells exclusively at large gem shows.

I first met this source at the 2017 Denver Gem Show. Our first encounter was short since it was my last day of shopping and I had already spent most of my budget, but their polished stock was the highest quality I had ever seen. A few months later, we met again in Tucson and this time I made sure to visit them at the beginning of the show!

In 2019, I was able to sit down with both owners and have a lengthy conversation about sourcing. Unlike most lapidaries, they were willing to speak with me in-depth about how they ensure their business is ethical. We talked about individual mines in India as well as how they source from other countries. We also talked about how they treat their own workers and about the links between business, karma, and God. Their willingness to talk and their pleasure at the conversation made me eager to develop and deepen this relationship.

Cavansite Healing, Mineralogy, and History

Published July 2017  •  Updated September 2025  •  Read Time: 7 minutes
Cavansite is a vivid blue mineral highly-prized by collectors.  The majority of specimens are from western India and are mined alongside Apophyllite and Stilbite.  It occasionally grows as small prismatic crystals, but is more likely to form as a thin plate, ball, or rosette.  It is a delicate mineral and should be kept on shelf or in a bowl, rather than carried in a pocket or medicine bag.  Energetically, Cavansite has a joyful presence, eager to help us develop our full potential.  If we feel stuck, it can help us to get out of a rut, push past a block, or otherwise break free.  It is a stone of clarity, helping us to know who we are, what we want to do, and how we can achieve our goals.
