Rock Family: Chlorite Quartz is a Clear Quartz with minor Chlorite inclusions, rather than a distinct mineral in its own right. Chlorite is not a distinct mineral either, but is instead a group of 15 closely-related phyllosilicate minerals most of which have a green color. The two most common varieties of Chlorite are Clinochlore (magnesium rich) and Chamosite (iron rich).
Formation: In most cases, Chlorite minerals are formed when sedimentary rocks transform into metamorphic rocks due to regional metamorphism. But in the case of Chlorite Quartz, it forms in an igneous process. The hydrothermal veins contain both magma and liquid water. Because of the high pressures, the water stays in a liquid form. The hot water dissolves various minerals in the original rock and slows down the growth process of new minerals like Quartz. As the Quartz slowly grows, it can acquire a thin film of green Chlorite which had dissolved in the hot water. As the Quartz continue to grow, it will cover up that Chlrorite layer, leaving the green Chlorite encased within. In some cases, the Chlorite will be found on both the inside and the outside of the Quartz crystal.
Mining: Chlorite minerals are very soft and can be scratched with a fingernail. It has little use industrially, but Chlorite minerals have been used for carvings since prehistoric times. They are secondary mineral byproducts from various igneous and metamorphic mines. In the case of Chlorite Quartz, the mine typically produces beautiful Quartz crystals clusters.
Enhancements: All Chlorite Quartz on the market may be considered fully natural, enhanced only by tumbling, cutting and polishing.
History of Chlorite Quartz
Chlorite Quartz is a relatively new crystal to the metaphysical world. As such, it is not included in any of the older lapidaries, texts that describe gemstones and their powers. It is included in some of the newer lapidaries and is a popular Quartz inclusion among collectors.
The name Chlorite comes from the Greek work chloros meaning “green”. It is group of 15 closely-related phyllosilicate minerals most of which have an attractive green color and which are very soft and easily carved. Mankind has been carving Chlorite minerals for many millennia. Chlorite has been used to make decorative and religious sculptures, housewares items, stamps, beads and jewelry. It was also used to create molds for working with bronze and copper.
The oldest known Chlorite sculpture can be found among the “Venus Figures” which were discovered in the Balzi Rossi caves in Italy in the 19th century. These prehistoric female figurines are thought to be between 24,000 and 19,000 years old. Chlorite sculptures that depict human figurines have been in many localities around the world, but are especially prominent in Central Asia and Iran. Typically the Chlorite is used for the clothing and/or hair of the statue. Sometimes a lighter colored stone, such as Limestone, may be used for the skin. Despite the fact that Chlorite minerals have been used in so many carvings, there doesn’t appear to be any metaphysical properties attached to these stones historically.

I have been doing business with this source since 2014. They are the oldest tumbling company in the world and have more varieties, in more sizes, than any other known source. The company started in California in the 1950s and was eventually bought by a British immigrant who had young sons. Eventually the company moved to South Africa in order to be closer to the source of their best-selling stone and to have the legal rights to export it. The company is now run by the sons and their childhood best friend.
The current owners visit many small and industrial-size mines personally. For artisanal-mined deposits in sub-Sahara Africa, the owners work with Gem Dealers who deal directly with the part-time miners. The majority of these Gem Dealers are women. Some, but not all, of their stones are labeled with country-of-origin. For those that aren’t, I ask the owners directly. As I’ve learned more about mining practices in individual countries, I have become increasingly selective about what I will purchase from them. However, they remain my preferred source for most of the stones I sell from sub-Sahara Africa.
