Supply Chain for Copper

This Copper was legally gathered from slag pits in Keweenaw, Michigan, USA.  It was melted down in a foundry at over 2200 degrees, and then cooled forming unique shapes of “splash nuggets.”

This gem dealer is a small foundry in Michigan, USA.  It is woman-owned and specializes in Copper sculptures and Michigan-mined stones. Workers have safe conditions and are paid fairly.

I first met this source at the 2020 Tucson Gem Show. It is a foundry, a factory or workshop that melts and casts metals. I was able to speak with the foundry’s owner and get detailed explanations about the difference between Native Copper and Copper nuggets and how each one is cleaned and treated. Michigan used to have a large commercial Copper mine, but it has been closed for many years. During its heyday, the Copper mine was so productive that there is still plenty of Copper in the slag-piles and along roadways that can be easily gathered.  In 2023, the owner decided to retire after over 40 years in business.  I called and arranged to buy the last of their Bismuth and copper nuggets.

In 2025, to my great delight, I met two women who had taken over the business.  We had an immediate connection, they are funny, smart and have good hearts.  I look forward to knowing them for many years to come.

Copper is one of the most important and widely-mined industrial minerals.  It’s mines are often enormous pit mines, owned by multinational corporations worth billions of dollars.  In fact, the largest mine on earth is so big, it can be seen from space! Copper mines also produce much of the precious metals, including gold and silver.  Copper is a soft metal that was one of the first to be worked by man, even before the first civilizations developed.  It is one of the few native elements that is widely used in the metaphysical industry.  This is partially due to its availability, but also due to its attractive coloring and energy which sings of the desire to create the life we dream of.
