Healing Properties of Desert Jasper

Spiritual: Desert Jasper has a wonderfully soothing and practical energy that makes it an excellent tool for all kinds of healing work.  It has a cheerful and grounding vibration, which helps to stabilize the spirit, heart, mind and body.  Desert Jasper is particularly comforting after we have engaged in hard spiritual work, which may have left us feeling somewhat depleted and out of balance.  Desert Jasper helps us to get steady again and refill our own well of energy.  Desert Jasper deepens our connection to Mother Earth and helps us to better communicate with animals, plants, minerals and the other non-human entities that dwell on this plane.  When we are feeling healthy and happy, Desert Jasper increases our sense of awe in the world around us, and invites to contemplate the many mysteries and magic.  Desert Jasper inspires positive changes, new beginnings, gentle endings, and renewal of hope and happiness.  It has a tranquil and very kind energy that is deeply pleasing to the soul.  Desert Jasper is attuned to all the Chakras and linked to the astrological signs of Leo. It is connected to the element of Earth and vibrates to the number 6.

Emotional: Desert Jasper calms worries and inspires a cheerful outlook on life.  It offers strong support during times of change.  If we are the ones making the change, it gives us stamina and exuberance for the tasks ahead.  It offers both creativity and grounding so that we can move forward boldly and be assured of a positive outcome.  If the change is happening against our will, Desert Jasper helps us to adjust to the new reality more easily.  It comforts and offers us courage.  It promises us that if we can relax into the present moment that we will find a steady sense of tranquility, despite whatever chaos is happening around us.  It helps us to breath deeply and settle into what is real, rather than longing for something that can no longer be.  Desert Jasper helps us to start over when we’ve suffered a major or minor setback.  It brings gentle endings, but also beautiful new beginnings.  When used for relationship work, Desert Jasper can attract new friends and lovers, as well as rekindling the flames of passion.  It can help us bring conflict to a close, and find resolution that satisfies all parties.

Mental: Desert Jasper encourages the mind to be organized and think in a linear fashion.  It helps us to create and maintain healthy habits so that our everyday life run smoothly.  It is a wonderful tool for practical problem-solving, particularly for mundane problems that have an oversize affect on our well-being.  Desert Jasper helps us to see problems, both big and small, very clearly. More importantly, once a problem is identified, Desert Jasper shows us the practical solution that will solve it as quickly and efficiently as possible.  Desert Jasper is recommended for writers, creatives, and thinkers who are stuck behind a mental block and need to move past it.  It has a happy energy that can pierce through gloomy thoughts and help us turn our attention to more positive and useful modes of being.

Physical: Desert Jasper is used by metaphysical healers to help with insomnia caused by anxiety.  It is also said to be helpful for allergy-relief, as well as conditions affecting the gallbladder, stomach and intestines.

Always use wisdom when considering crystal therapies for healing.

Location: Desert Jasper is a kind of Polychrome Jasper found only on the northwestern coast of Madagascar.

Mineral Family: Jasper is an opaque Silicate mineral which often has spots. However, the name “Jasper” is often used to describe any spotted stone. As such many varieties of spotted Rhyolite, a type of igneous rock, are misrepresented as Jaspers, for example, Ocean Jasper and Leopardskin Jasper.  There is little verifiable information about Desert Jasper’s unique mineralogy.  Based on the deposit location, it can be inferred that it is a sedimentary rock that has been “silicified” by Quartz, turning it into a Chalcedony.  Chalcedony is a subcategory of Quartz that includes both Jaspers and Agates, as well as other microcrystalline Quartz.  While Desert Jasper lacks spots, it nevertheless may be considered a “true” Jasper.

Formation: Jasper and other microcrystalline Quartz forms when silica acid penetrates clay or sand, and solidifies in sedimentary rocks. Where the silica acid cools it hardens into Quartz, but with the addition of millions of tiny particles of sand, clay, and other minerals. These inclusions give Jasper their brilliant colors and random markings.

Mining: Mined at its primary deposit using simple tools.  It can be found as massive boulders as well as smaller rocks.

Enhancements: All varieties of Jasper, including Desert Jasper, are completely natural, enhanced only by tumbling, cutting, and polishing.

History of Desert Jasper

The name “Jasper” is a generic name given to any spotted stone as well as most semi-transparent or opaque Chalcedony.  Jaspers are found all over the world and come in a wide range of colors and patterns.  Some deposits are so unique that they are given a unique name.  Desert Jasper was discovered in 2006 along the dry Northwestern coast of Madagascar, while prospectors were searching for more deposits of the famously colorful Ocean Jasper.  While both varieties of Jaspers have bright colors, Desert Jasper lacks the orbicular spots that make Ocean Jasper so distinctive.

Desert Jasper is a variety of Polychrome Jasper, which means “painted with many colors.”  Polychrome Jasper is found in several locations worldwide, with each deposit having a very distinct coloring and character.  The variety found in Madagascar is notable for its desert-hues and strong contrasting colors.  Northwestern Madagascar is primarily composed of sedimentary rocks and most likely Desert Jasper is a combination of minerals and limestone that have been silicified, in a similar fashion to that of Mookaite Jasper in Australia.  While Desert and Mookaite Jasper have very different colors, they do seem to share some similar patterning.

Sourcing Relationship

I first met the owner of the lapidary at the 2006 Gem and Mineral show in Tucson, Arizona. At that time I was working for a crystal shop in Utah and was at Tucson primarily as a “pack mule” to help carry all the stones. It was generally agreed by our crew that the “Madagascar” tent contained the most beautiful stones in the entire show.

In 2014, I embarked on my first buying trip for Moonrise Crystals.  The company I knew of only as “Madagascar” was the one company I was most determined to find and buy from. This lapidary company only sells at a handful of major gem shows.  The only time they are in the USA is for the Tucson Gem Show. During the rest of the year, the lapidary hand polishes their stock and also does charity work in their local community.  They continue to offer some of the most beautiful tumbled stones in the industry and are among my favorite suppliers.

In 2019, Moonrise Crystals and the Madagascar lapidary company joined together to financially support a rural school in Madagascar.

Loved our first order. The most potent and deep stones we have purchased. Have referred already to a family member and grateful for your shop to have somewhere to confidently refer her and other family to

  3. Anita V. (Illinois)

pictures do not do it justice

  4. Beth S. (Kentucky)

For a long time I put off ordering a Desert Jasper. Sure, it was one of the most dramatic looking varieties of Jasper, but I already had plenty of Jasper in my collection. When I did order it, I got a wonderful surprise. It’s every bit as beautiful as the photo suggests, with desert colors vividly contrasting with a streak of blue-grey like the sky. The surprise is how gentle its energy is, so much softer and sweeter than a Red or even a Yellow Jasper, yet just as firm and strong. This is a very easy stone to carry all day, a stone for both action and restful thought.

Your stones arrived today. Thank you so much! My dog tried to lick the desert jasper as soon as I opened it, so I’m taking that as a good sign. 🙂
