When we know better, we do better. Ethical sourcing is a constantly evolving process. If the original sourcing for the stone still passes Moonrise Crystals’ current standards, it will be restocked as soon as possible. If the original sourcing is no longer acceptable, it will be restocked when/if a better supplier can be found.

This Dioptase comes from Tsumeb Mine in Namibia or the area nearby. The mine’s focus is Copper and Dioptase is a rare copper-related mineral. The mine is known to produce gorgeous transparent Dioptase crystals as well as opaque varieties like this. The mine itself it underground. It is possible that artisanal miners are allowed to mine in some areas. It is also possible that this particular Dioptase was mined nearby informally.

Lapidary / Gem Dealer

This lapidary drum tumbles stones in Cape Town, South Africa. It is a family business, founded by a father and passed on to his sons. Factory workers have safe conditions and are paid fairly. The lapidary sells primarily at two gemshows, one in the United States and the other in France.

Sourcing Relationship

I have been doing business with this source since 2014. They are the oldest tumbling company in the world and have more varieties, in more sizes, than any other known source. The company started in California in the 1950s and was eventually bought by a British immigrant who had young sons. Eventually the company moved to South Africa in order to be closer to the source of their best-selling stone and to have the legal rights to export it. The company is now run by the sons and their childhood best friend.

The current owners personally visit many small and large mines. To connect with artisanal miners in sub-Sahara Africa, they work with local Gem Dealers who travel far into the bush to buy from part-time miners. The majority of these Gem Dealers are women. Some, but not all, of their stones are labeled with country-of-origin. For those that aren’t, I ask the owners directly. As I’ve learned more about mining practices in individual countries, I have become increasingly selective about what I will purchase from them. However, they remain my preferred source for most of the stones I sell from sub-Sahara Africa.

Dioptase is a rare cyclosilicate mineral found in deserts near Copper deposits. It is often found alongside Chrysocolla near the surface of the Earth. Dioptase can be a dark blue-green or a vivid-green depending on the location. Transparent crystals can be easily confused with Emerald and Aquamarine. Humans have been using this crystal for art and spirituality since the Stone Age. Today, crystal healers say that Dioptase’s energy embodies the concept of “Namaste” (that which is Holy inside of me, greets that which is Holy inside of you). The Dioptase is quite nifty. It has such an interesting shape and coloration. It exudes very strong water energy and also significant dragon vibes, both of which are excellent. Overall very nice editions, I’m quite pleased with my purchase.
