Supply Chain for Dravite Tourmaline

This Dravite Tourmaline comes from artisanal miners in Umpavalli, Odisha, India. Dravite Tourmaline is mined in a variety of ways, from shaft to open-pit to underground.

This lapidary hand-polishes stones in Mumbai, India. It is owned by two long-time friends and business partners. Unusual for India, factory workers have safe conditions and are paid fairly. It is also an exporter and sells exclusively at large gem shows.

I first met this source at the 2017 Denver Gem Show. Our first encounter was short since it was my last day of shopping and I had already spent most of my budget, but their polished stock was the highest quality I had ever seen. A few months later, we met again in Tucson and this time I made sure to visit them at the beginning of the show!

In 2019, I was able to sit down with both owners and have a lengthy conversation about sourcing. Unlike most lapidaries, they were willing to speak with me in-depth about how they ensure their business is ethical. We talked about individual mines in India as well as how they source from other countries. We also talked about how they treat their own workers and about the links between business, karma, and God. Their willingness to talk and their pleasure at the conversation made me eager to develop and deepen this relationship.

Dravite Tourmaline Healing, Mineralogy, and History

Published June 2021  •  Updated August 2024  •  Read Time: 7 minutes
Dravite Tourmaline is one of the three major types of Tourmaline, along with Schorl (black) and Elbaite (multi-colored).  Dravite Tourmalines are typically brown, yellow or green, and are rich in magnesium and sodium.  They are named after the Drava River in Slovenia, because the first one scientifically studied came from that riverbed.  Dravite Tourmaline has a wonderful healing energy that can be tuned to an individual or used for a larger group.  It is fantastic for healing families and communities that have been torn apart by trauma.  It brings a compassionate and practical energy that helps resolve problems and create healthy new frameworks for the future.
