Today I had the pleasure of opening my own latest package of crystalline goodness from your shop :). I am officially in love with everything you picked out for me. Thank you. Julie! I cannot decide which of the crystals feels the best today. Every time I hold one of them and switch to another my brain just sighs with happiness. The dark blue dumortierite feels really different to me than the lighter variety (which I had ordered from you a while ago and enjoyed, but this is a whole other level of intensity).

Supply Chain for Dumortierite

When we know better, we do better. Ethical sourcing is a constantly evolving process. If the original sourcing for the stone still passes Moonrise Crystals’ current standards, it will be restocked as soon as possible. If the original sourcing is no longer acceptable, it will be restocked when/if a better supplier can be found.

This Madagascar comes from artisanal miner in Amoron’i Mania in central Madagascar.

This gem dealer is a female-owned business that specializes in large Amethyst geodes. The business also sells a few stones polished in China.

I first met this source at the 2006 Tucson Gem Show. At that time, I was working for a crystal shop in Utah and was at Tucson primarily as a “pack mule” to help carry all the stones. The business specializes in exquisite Amethyst geodes and large stone statues. The owner is an energy-worker who has worked with many celebrities. Since they didn’t carry tumbled stones, I took no note of them when I started my own business.

In 2018, my usual source for Black Tourmaline was sold out and I happened to run into my old boss. She quietly gave me a wink and a nod, and sent me to “the statue tent.” While their basic business had not changed, they now sell a variety of small polished stones as well. The amount of middlemen involved does give me pause. I only purchase stones from this source if I can’t find the stone elsewhere and I am confident about mining and lapidary conditions in the country of origin.

Dumortierite is a nesosilicate mineral that is rich in aluminum.  It is usually brown or blue, but can occasionally be green, purple or pink!  Sometimes it is used to make high-grade porcelain, but the prettiest specimens are often saved for the collector’s market.  Dumortierite was first discovered in southern France in the late nineteenth century and was named after Eugene Dumortier, a French paleontologist.  Dumortierite is a wonderful stone for the mind and is recommended for students, scholars and life-long learners of all kinds.  Its energy keeps our perspectives clear and it helps us to feel calm and confident in our opinions, which remaining open-minded when new information is presented.
