Mineral Family: Gold Tiger’s Eye is a rare Silicate mineral. Silicate minerals form the largest family of minerals, including more than 25% of all known minerals and 40% of all common minerals. In addition to being a major part of the Earth’s crust, Silicate minerals have also been found on the moon and in meteorites. Silicates are minerals which contain the elements Silicon (a light gray shiny metal) and Oxygen (a colorless gas). Together, these two elements form a tetrahedron – a shape similar to a pyramid – with a Silicon atom in the center and Oxygen atoms at each of the four corners. These tetrahedra connect with other chemical structures, in six different ways, to form various minerals and rocks. There are six main groups of Silicate minerals, and these main groups are further subdivided into secondary subdivisions, such as Quartz and Feldspar. Tiger’s Eye is a semi-precious variety of Quartz that exhibits chatoyancy, or a vertical luminescent band. Most Tiger’s Eye is golden-brown, but it can also be red or blue. When it is combined with silver Hematite, it is called Tiger Iron.

Formation: Tiger’s Eye is formed when Quartz replaces the mineral Crocidolite (blue asbestos). As the Crocidolite decomposes, Iron is exposed and oxidized which transforms it into limonite. Tiger’s Eye is essentially limonite fibers embedded in Quartz. Early in the process the stone is still blue and is called Hawks Eye (or Blue Tiger’s Eye). As the process continues, the blue is gradually replaced by gold, and the stone is then called Gold Tiger’s Eye. If the Gold Tiger’s Eye is then heated, either by natural causes or artificially by humans, the stone’s color may become red, at which point it is called Red Tiger’s Eye

Mining: Tiger’s Eye is mined from primary deposits, which are located in metamorphic rock. Tiger’s Eye is mined in an open pit setting, since Tiger’s Eye is found directly under the soil. Tiger’s Eye is the principal stone mined in the larger deposits in South Africa and Western Australia. In smaller deposits, the main purpose of a mine is more likely to be asbestos and Iron.

History of Gold Tiger’s Eye

Gold Tiger’s Eye was generally not included in early lapidaries, texts which describe gemstones and their powers. For most of history, Gold Tiger’s Eye was relatively rare, since the main deposits are in South Africa and western Australia. reHowever, in modern times, Gold Tiger’s Eye’s distinctive flash, as well as its basic affordability and availability, has allowed its metaphysical properties to be widely explored.

In the ancient world, South African Gold Tiger’s Eye was sometimes traded North, and has been found in ancient Egyptian and Assyrian tombs, crafted as jewelry and talismans. On a few occasions, Gold Tiger’s Eye seems to have been used as the glowing gemstone eyes in statues of the Egyptian sun god Ra and the earth god Geb. It is thought to represent the “all seeing and all knowing eye” of these benevolent gods. Centuries later, some Roman soldiers supposedly carried Tiger’s Eye with them into battle, for courage and protection.

Gold Tiger’s Eye, and the more rare blue Hawks Eye and Red Tiger’s Eye, are famous for the way they seem to shimmer when moved. This trait is known in geology as “chatoyancy.”  The term “chatoyant” is a combination of the French words for “cat” and “eye.” Tiger’s Eye’s bold gold coloring elevated it above a mere kitty, to instead honor the Tiger, the largest and most powerful member of the feline family.

Sourcing Relationship

I have been doing business with this source since 2014.  They are the oldest tumbling company in the world and have more varieties, in more sizes, than any other known source.  The company started in California in the 1950s and was eventually bought by a British immigrant who had young sons.  Eventually the company moved to South Africa in order to be closer to the source of their best-selling stone, Gold Tiger’s Eye, and to have the legal rights to export it.  The company is now run by the sons and their childhood best friend.

The current owners visit many small and industrial-size mines personally.  For artisanal-mined deposits in sub-Sahara Africa, the owners work with Gem Dealers who deal directly with the part-time miners.  The majority of these Gem Dealers are women.  Some, but not all, of their stones are labeled with country-of-origin.  For those that aren’t, I ask the owners directly.  As I’ve learned more about mining practices in individual countries, I have become increasingly selective about what I will purchase from them.  However, they remain my preferred source for most of the stones I sell from sub-Sahara Africa.
