Healing Properties of Golden Himalayan Quartz

Spiritual: Golden Himalayan Quartz has one of the most powerful energies of all crystals. It purifies the energy of everything around it, and is one of the few “self-cleansing crystals” capable of maintaining its own brilliant energy field. It is a potent tool for manifestation, helping us to know our desires and ask the Divine to guide our actions and lead us to success. Golden Himalayan Quartz acts as a bright Light during the dark times in our life, giving us  strength and hope. Golden Himalayan Quartz is attuned to the Solar Plexus and Crown Chakra and linked to the astrological signs of Sagittarius and Capricorn. It is connected to the element of Storm and vibrates to the number 2 and 8.

Emotional: Golden Himalayan Quartz has a joyful and happy energy, making it one of the most useful stones to use to treat depression and anxiety. Its purifying energy helps protect us from being drained by difficult situations or people. Furthermore, it can help us to set and maintain clear emotional boundaries so that we don’t need to rely on its protection. It helps us to see that it is ok to say “no” and also to be clear about what we WANT rather than merely focused on the minimum we NEED to survive. Golden Himalayan Quartz encourages us to think and feel clearly about what is necessary for our happiness and to confidently do the work necessary to bring that about. It teaches us that when we do the work, we are properly entitled to enjoy the result.

Mental: Golden Himalayan Quartz’ purifying energy helps us to keep our thoughts clear and clean, so we can make good decisions and put them into action immediately. It helps us to rapidly digest complex information, particularly as related to power, boundaries, and manifestation. It helps us to organize our thoughts into those which serve us, and those which do not, and to quickly discard those that do not. It is particularly helpful for helping us to understand and move past any mental blocks dealing with money. It helps us to let go of feelings of being “undeserving” or the erroneous belief that money is “evil.” Instead, Golden Himalayan Quartz shows us that money buys marshmallows and builds hospitals, and can therefore be considered a “good thing” worthy of being gathered, saved, spent, and enjoyed.

Physical: Golden Himalayan Quartz has been used to treat the stomach, spleen and pancreas and is said to promote digestion. It is commonly used by metaphysical healers to speed up metabolism and heal the endocrine system. It is particularly useful for helping us to make the practical lifestyle changes that are necessary after being diagnosed with early diabetes.

Always use wisdom when considering crystal therapies for healing.

Mineral Family: Golden Himalayan Quartz is a variety of Citrine, or yellow Quartz mined in the Himalayas.  All varieties of Quartz are Silicate minerals, the largest family of minerals, including more than 25% of all known minerals and 40% of all common minerals. In addition to being a major part of the Earth’s crust, Silicate minerals have also been found on the moon and in meteorites. Silicates are minerals which contain the elements Silicon (a light gray shiny metal) and Oxygen (a colorless gas). Together, these two elements form a tetrahedra – a shape similar to a pyramid – with a Silicon atom in the center and Oxygen atoms at each of the three corners. These tetrahedras connect with other chemical structures, in six different ways, to form various minerals and rocks. There are six main groups of Silicate minerals, and these main groups are further subdivided into secondary subdivisions, such as Quartz and Feldspar.  Quartz is a large mineral family in its own right and its members come in every shade of the rainbow. Purple Quartz is Amethyst.  Green Quartz is Prasiolite. Brown Quartz is Smoky Quartz. Pink Quartz is, of course, Rose Quartz. Colorless Quartz is called Clear Quartz or Rock Crystal.

Formation: Golden Quartz is created when liquid magma from a volcanic explosion cools down and transforms into igneous rocks. During this cooling down period, silica acid bubbles shift from being a gas/liquid into a solid compound. The bubble becomes a hollow space in the igneous rock and the silica acid becomes Quartz crystals. Trace particles of iron within the silica acid gives it a yellow or golden color, otherwise the silica acid would transform into Clear Quartz.

Mining: Most Golden Quartz is found near or in Amethyst mines, since the only chemical difference between the two stones is how quickly the silica acid cooled down! In the case of Golden Himalayan Quartz, it is mined near the border between Nepal and Tibet/China.  They are mined by hand at heights between 10,000 and 15,000 feet above sea level, and carried by humans and pack animals down the mountains to bring them to market.

History of Golden Himalayan Quartz

Himalayan Quartz comes from the oldest and highest Quartz deposits in the world, found at over 10,000 feet above sea level nestled among the earth’s tallest mountains.  As such, they are highly desired by the metaphysical community who detect a singularly high vibration distinct from those minerals found at lower levels.  While the more generic form of Citrine is included in many ancient, medieval and modern lapidaries, few specifically distinguish Golden Himalayan Quartz from other Citrine deposits.

Among locals, Himalayan Quartz are sometimes called “the Eyes of God” and to give gifts of clear intuitive sight to anyone who holds one.  The Quartz are believed to hold within them all the knowledge and wisdom of the yogis, saints and other gurus.

The Supply Chain

The Supply Chain is short.

The Mine and Lapidary are located in the same country.

The Mine

This Himalayan Quartz was artisanally-mined Kullu Valley (Himalayan Mountains), Himachal Pradesh, India.

The exact deposit is unknown, but most likely caused only minor environmental damage,

and would have been relatively low risk for miners.

Sourcing Relationship

I first met the owner of the lapidary in 2014 at the Gem and Mineral show in Tucson, Arizona.  It was my first buying trip for my own store and I was nervous.  Most lapidary owners were brisk and impatient with my questions, especially when I asked about the mines and the supply chains.   But one man stood out to me as particularly patient and kind.  He had been a whole-seller for over twenty years, yet he was happy to meet someone brand-new to the industry.

He took time to talk to me about the stones.  They came from his home country of India and he was able to tell me exactly which state or territory each one came from and some of the conditions at the individual mines.  When I told him that I wanted to source ethically, he said that it would be difficult, but that it was worthwhile challenge.  He made me feel like I could succeed, both at ethical sourcing and at being a business woman.

I looked forward to a long business relationship with him.  He died, unexpectedly, in 2016.

I stayed in touch with his family and in 2017 met his wife, teenage daughter, and his father.  This three-generation family has picked up the pieces and learned how to run the business.  The wife had never worked before, but she has gracefully stepped into her new role as a business owner.  Her father-in-law offers practical and moral support, but makes sure that everyone knows that SHE is the boss and that checks should be written directly to her.  The family continues to be supportive of my efforts to ethically source.  More than any other lapidary, they are willing to speak openly with me about the difficult parts of the industry. They have invited me to visit them in India, to visit the mines and their lapidary.  The daughter is now a GIA (Gemological Institute of America) Graduate and is interested in reiki and other healing modalities.  As she has grown up, she has become increasingly concerned about ethical issues.  The wife, the daughter and I are in active conversation about how we can support each other so that their supply chain becomes more ethical.
