This Apophyllite comes from artisanal miners in Mahrashtra, India. It is a byproduct of basalt mining in the area which produces gravel for India’s railroad tracks. The Apophyllite is mined in surface pits, using hand tools and possibly some light machinery. It is relatively low risk for miners.

Sourcing Relationship

I first met this source at the 2017 Denver Gem Show. Our first encounter was short since it was my last day of shopping and I had already spent most of my budget, but their polished stock was the highest quality I had ever seen. A few months later, we met again in Tucson and this time I made sure to visit them at the beginning of the show!

In 2019, I was able to sit down with both owners and have a lengthy conversation about sourcing. Unlike most lapidaries, they were willing to speak with me in-depth about how they ensure their business is ethical. We talked about individual mines in India as well as how they source from other countries. We also talked about how they treat their own workers and about the links between business, karma, and God. Their willingness to talk and their pleasure at the conversation made me eager to develop and deepen this relationship.

Green Apophyllite Healing, Mineralogy, and History

Apophyllite is a beautiful crystal that is typically colorless, but can also be green, pink or yellow. When colorless it looks very similar to Clear Quartz. Of the two, Apophyllite is a more delicate and needs to be handled with care, and its energy is likewise gentle, very high and pure. It isn’t a single mineral, but rather a group of three closely-related minerals, whose difference can only be seen on an atomic level. Most of the time, when we think about Apophyllite, we are specifically thinking of Fluorapophyllite. Most of the crystals on the market comes from Pune, India where it is mined as a secondary mineral alongside Basalt. The minerals which grow in Puna form very lovely colorless and green crystals with excellent points and transparency. […]
