Grossular Garnet
Energy Vibrations

Green Grossular Garnet is rarely available in tumbled form. These little gems were mined in Kenya and tumbled in South Africa. The Grossular has a little bit of the matrix stone on it and the tumbling process has left lots of grooves and caves in these stones. If they had been polished completely smooth, it would have broken the Garnets up into tiny chips. Grossular Garnet is a fabulous stone for attracting abundance. Combine it with a gold stone like Citrine or Gold Tigers Eye - and watch your money grow!

Ethically Sourced

Grossular Garnet from Kenya

This Grossular Garnet comes from artistanal miners in Kenya.   The exact deposit is unknown, but it is likely to be in the southern part of the Great Rift Valley, somewhere near Tsavo National Park.  Artisanal mining for garnets typically has a low environmental impact.

This lapidary drum tumbles stones in Cape Town, South Africa. It is a family business, founded by a father and passed on to his sons. Factory workers have safe conditions and are paid fairly. The lapidary sells primarily at two gemshows, one in the United States and the other in France.

I have been doing business with this source since 2014. They are the oldest tumbling company in the world and have more varieties, in more sizes, than any other known source. The company started in California in the 1950s and was eventually bought by a British immigrant who had young sons. Eventually the company moved to South Africa in order to be closer to the source of their best-selling stone and to have the legal rights to export it. The company is now run by the sons and their childhood best friend.

The current owners personally visit many small and large mines. To connect with artisanal miners in sub-Sahara Africa, they work with local Gem Dealers who travel far into the bush to buy from part-time miners. The majority of these Gem Dealers are women. Some, but not all, of their stones are labeled with country-of-origin. For those that aren’t, I ask the owners directly. As I’ve learned more about mining practices in individual countries, I have become increasingly selective about what I will purchase from them. However, they remain my preferred source for most of the stones I sell from sub-Sahara Africa.

Grossular Garnet Healing, Mineralogy, and History

Published June 2016  •  Updated February 2024  •  Read Time: 5 minutes
Most of the time, when people think of Garnet they imagine an Almandine or Pyrope Garnet – a dark red jewel.  Grossular Garnets are never red, they’re usually green! They can also be orange, pink, yellow or even white.  While the garnet family is named after red pomegranates seeds, Grossular’s name comes from its resemblance to yellow-green Gooseberries.  Depending on the color or location of the gem, it may be known by another name, such as Hessonite Garnet (orange) or Tsarosite Garnet (dark green).  Grossularite Garnet is a stone of abundance and prosperity, which can be in the form of money but also in such intangible as friendship and joy.
