Supply Chain for Hessonite Garnet

This Hessonite Garnet comes from artisanal miners in Odisha, India. Artisanal mining for garnets typically has a low environmental impact and is relatively low risk for miners.

This lapidary hand-polishes stones in Mumbai, India. It is owned by two long-time friends and business partners. Unusual for India, factory workers have safe conditions and are paid fairly. It is also an exporter and sells exclusively at large gem shows.

I first met this source at the 2017 Denver Gem Show. Our first encounter was short since it was my last day of shopping and I had already spent most of my budget, but their polished stock was the highest quality I had ever seen. A few months later, we met again in Tucson and this time I made sure to visit them at the beginning of the show!

In 2019, I was able to sit down with both owners and have a lengthy conversation about sourcing. Unlike most lapidaries, they were willing to speak with me in-depth about how they ensure their business is ethical. We talked about individual mines in India as well as how they source from other countries. We also talked about how they treat their own workers and about the links between business, karma, and God. Their willingness to talk and their pleasure at the conversation made me eager to develop and deepen this relationship.

Hessonite Garnet Healing, Mineralogy, and History

When people think of Garnet they typically imagine an Almandine or Pyrope Garnet – a dark red jewel.  Hessonite Garnets are always a vivid orange! They are actually a type of Grossular Garnet, a variety which is usually green but can come in other colors.  Hessonite is sometimes called “Cinnamon Stone” because of its color and its spicy energy.  Hessonite Garnet has a sassy and joyful vibration, that reminds us that life is short and so we should do our best to make it sweet.  It helps us to release misplaced shame and guilt, and helps to strip away inhibitions.  If we need to question the beliefs that we were raised with, Hessonite makes the process easier. I bought several stones from Julie, and she took the time to accommodate my special requests. I’m very happy with all of them! They are gorgeous and lustrous. Worth the extra cost to know where the stones came from. Thank you!! Will be back for more :)

I received my garnets, and the are all beautiful! It took a while to be able to see them in the sunlight due to terrible weather, but they were all stunning when I was finally able to.

The rhodolite and hessonite are awesome! I love holding them up to the light and gazing inside! I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to tell them apart easily, but the rhodolite has such a beautiful red-purple color while the hessonite is a warm orange-red.
