Ethically Sourced Iolite

Know where your crystals come from

This Iolite comes from artisanal miners near Karur, Tamil Naidu, India. It may have been mined alluvially or in a granite mine, in either case it would have a low environmental impact and be relatively low risk for miners.

This lapidary hand-polishes stones in Mumbai, India. It is owned by two long-time friends and business partners. Unusual for India, factory workers have safe conditions and are paid fairly. It is also an exporter and sells exclusively at large gem shows.

I first met this source at the 2017 Denver Gem Show. Our first encounter was short since it was my last day of shopping and I had already spent most of my budget, but their polished stock was the highest quality I had ever seen. A few months later, we met again in Tucson and this time I made sure to visit them at the beginning of the show!

In 2019, I was able to sit down with both owners and have a lengthy conversation about sourcing. Unlike most lapidaries, they were willing to speak with me in-depth about how they ensure their business is ethical. We talked about individual mines in India as well as how they source from other countries. We also talked about how they treat their own workers and about the links between business, karma, and God. Their willingness to talk and their pleasure at the conversation made me eager to develop and deepen this relationship.

Iolite Healing, Mineralogy, and History

Iolite is a gemology name for the mineral Cordierite.  Most Cordierite is dull grey or  brown, but on rare occasionally it forms fantastic blue-violet crystals.  These crystals often demonstrate pleochroism, an optical phenomenon in which an object appears to be different colors depending on which angle it is observed from. Iolites appear blue from most angles, but can be yellow or orange when viewed just right.  A skilled navigator can also use Iolite as a type of compass on cloudy days with remarkable accuracy.  Iolite helps us to see clearly and to know the truth beyond the surface.  Its energy  opens the Third Eye and reveals our true path.
