Healing Properties of Lepidolite

Spiritual: Lepidolite is an incredible tool for personal transformation and steady serenity. It opens both the Heart and the Third Eye, helping us to travel farther and swifter on our spiritual path. It reveals what is blocking us from attaining success and happiness, and what we need to do in order to move forward.  It gives us courage to leave old lives behind and to be reborn into something more beautiful. Lepidolite steadily pushes us toward our Highest Good, holding us steady during hard times, so that we can uphold our ideals rather than falling into an emotional mess.  It encourages us to enjoy the present moment, rather than getting lost in the past or worried about what the future may hold.  Lepidolite offers a constant reassurance that allows us to move through the ups and downs of life peacefully, knowing the only constant is change and that our fundamental self is both capable and loveable.  Lepidolite protects us from negative energies and helps us to actively put forth positive energies into the world.  It is also good for gardeners, of the soul or of plants, who tend with careful patience and do what is needed for health and abundance.  Lepidolite is attuned to the Heart and Third Eye Chakras and linked to the astrological sign of Libra. It is connected to the element of Water and vibrates to the number 8.

Emotional: Lepidolite encourages us to take personal responsibility for our lives and to take the necessary steps to transform ourselves into the magnificent person we were born to be.  It lights the way to freedom, releasing us from the chains of the past.  It helps us to find our deepest center, the place where we are most secure and powerful and to live from this place.  It balances our emotional highs and lows and helps us be more steady.  When we are stressed or feel despair, Lepidolite brings us hope and self-love.  It encourages us to protect ourselves while also trusting that the world is good place.  If we have been traumatized, Lepidolite pushes us towards self-healing, rather than waiting for someone else to fix us.  It reminds us that often our struggles against feeling pain, cause more fuss and trouble than is necessary.  Lepidolite encourages us to calmly deal with the original injury without flinching or looking away.  Lepidolite gives us courage to face our shadows and to heal them fully.  It reduces the power of other people’s negative influences.  It also encourages us to let go of any attachment to emotional drama and trauma, and to stop wearing them as a badge of pride or refusing to recognize our own role in their creation.  Lepidolite invites us to laugh more, be discerning and not take life so seriously.

Mental: Lepidolite is a wonderful stone during times of transition.  It helps us to restructure, reorganize and make new habits.  Lepidolite encourages us to make good goals, be realistic, prioritize and stay focused and diligent.  Lepidolite reduces the power of worry, fear, envy and resentment.  It invites us to be more honest with ourselves and with others.  When we are faced with criticism, Lepidolite invites us to calmly check if there is validity in the criticism.  If there is, then to accept and evolve, rather than being defensive of something that doesn’t serve anyone at all.  If there is no validity in the criticism, then Lepidolite encourages us to dismiss the words and carry blissfully on.  Lepidolite is especially good for reducing anxious and obsessive thoughts.  In particular, the constant gnawing negative question of “what if?”  Lepidolite helps us to objectively ask ourselves, “Has that happened or is this just fear? Is it likely to happen in real life? Does it even matter in the larger scheme of things?”  Lepidolite encourages us to view ourselves as competent and able to handle whatever life throws at us.  Lepidolite reminds us that transformation takes time, but if we remain dedicated then positive change is inevitable.

Physical: Lepidolite is recommended for a wide-assortment of mental and emotional disorders, including anxiety, bipolar, ADHD, sleep disorders, eating disorders and addiction.   It reminds us that we are not our disorder and our disorder is not in charge of our life, even though the disorder may taunt us and trick us into believing its lies.  Lepidolite reminds us that we have to actively figure out how to work around it, redirect it or get rid of it, for the best chance at a happy and successful life.  This may mean asking for help or accommodations, taking medication or changing our habits.   If something doesn’t work, Lepidolite helps us to remember that just because “that didn’t work” it doesn’t mean “something else won’t help.”  During the day, Lepidolite can help us to stay focused on the task at hand.  At night, Lepidolite can help us to relax our body and mind so we can drift into sleep and have sweet dreams.  In the case of incurable, progressive disorders, such as Alzheimer’s, Lepidolite can help us to make important decisions early on, rather than delaying until it is too late.  Lepidolite is also a good talisman for anyone suffering from nerve damage or chronic nerve pain.

Mineral Family: Lepidolite is a combination of various types of mica minerals, which are Silicates. Silicate minerals are the largest family of minerals, including more than 25% of all known minerals and 40% of all common minerals. In addition to being a major part of the Earth’s crust, Silicate minerals have also been found on the moon and in meteorites. Silicates are minerals which contain the elements Silicon (a light gray shiny metal) and Oxygen (a colorless gas). Together, these two elements form a tetrahedron – a shape similar to a pyramid – with a Silicon atom in the center and Oxygen atoms at each of the four corners. These tetrahedra connect with other chemical structures, in six different ways, to form various minerals and rocks. Lepidolite belongs to the Phyllosilicate group, which includes many different types of mica minerals, including Fuchsite (green mica) and Biotite (black mica). Initially Lepidolite was thought to be “purple Mica” but now it it is believed to be a fusion of several mica minerals. The Phyllosilicate group also includes such diverse minerals as Chrysocolla, Prehnite, and Serpentine.

Formation: Lepidolite is type of mica containing lithium. It occurs almost exclusively in granitic pegmatites in association with other lithium-bearing minerals such as Beryl, Topaz, Quartz, and Tourmaline.

Mining: Typically mined from the primary deposits which still have their original relationship with the host rock. It is mined as a source of lithium and used to make glass and enamels.

History of Lepidolite

Lepidolite was “discovered” relatively recently by the metaphysical community and so it was not included in any early lapidaries, texts that describe gemstones and their powers. It was first documented in the 18th century and originally named “lilalite” as tribute to its lilac-purple coloring. Some sources say that the name came from the Hindu word lila, meaning “divine play.” While this story is delightful, the former story is much more likely. Later, its official name was changed to Lepidolite, which comes from the Greek word lepidos meaning “scale” a reference to Lepidolite’s scaly, shimmery appearance – which is caused by flakes of lithium.

Lepidolite is one of the most important natural sources for lithium, a soft silvery-white metal. Lithium is the lightest metal on earth and is used to make millions of objects and gadgets beloved by the modern world, from airplanes to cellphones, from kitchen blenders to batteries. It also is used to make the mood-stabilizing drug, Lithium, which is used to treat the manic phase of bi-polar disorder.

Sourcing Relationship

I first met one of the owners of the lapidary at the Denver Gem Show in 2017.  Our first encounter was short since it was my last day of shopping and I had already spent most of my budget.  But their tumbled stock was the highest quality I had ever seen.  A few months later we met again in Tucson and this time I made sure to see them at the beginning of the show!

In 2019, at the Tucson Gem Show, I was able to sit down with both owners and have a lengthy conversation about sourcing.  Unlike most vendors, they were willing to speak with me in-depth about how they make sure their business is ethical.  We talked about individual mines they source from both in India as well as how they source from other countries.  We also talked about how they treat their own workers and about the links between business, karma and God.   Their willingness to talk and their pleasure at the conversation makes me eager to continue to develop and deepen this relationship.
