Supply Chain for Lizardite

This Lizardite comes from the Dypingdal serpentine-magnesite deposit in Viken, Norway.  It is industrially mined for Magnesite, but some of the vivid Lizardite is set aside for the collector’s market.

This lapidary hand-polishes stones in Mumbai, India. It is owned by two long-time friends and business partners. Unusual for India, factory workers have safe conditions and are paid fairly. It is also an exporter and sells exclusively at large gem shows.

I first met this source at the 2017 Denver Gem Show. Our first encounter was short since it was my last day of shopping and I had already spent most of my budget, but their polished stock was the highest quality I had ever seen. A few months later, we met again in Tucson and this time I made sure to visit them at the beginning of the show!

In 2019, I was able to sit down with both owners and have a lengthy conversation about sourcing. Unlike most lapidaries, they were willing to speak with me in-depth about how they ensure their business is ethical. We talked about individual mines in India as well as how they source from other countries. We also talked about how they treat their own workers and about the links between business, karma, and God. Their willingness to talk and their pleasure at the conversation made me eager to develop and deepen this relationship.

Lizardite is a member of the Serpentine family.  While the name might appear fanciful, it is a formal scientific name.  This pretty stone was first described in 1955 from a deposit on Lizard Point in Great Britain.  It is a metamorphic rock and its vivid lime-green color is because it was previously an igneous rock studded with Peridot.  Like other varieties of Serpentine, it has a wise and grounded energy.  Lizardite is especially good for teaching patience and non-attachment.  It is a fantastic stone for boundary work […]
