This Manganese comes from a small claim in New Mexico, USA. The miner has been working his claim for decades using hand tools and small machinery. It has a low environmental impact and is relatively low risk for the miner. This stone was traded, rather than sold. Every year the miner from New Mexico brings a 5 gallon bucket of rough Merlinite to the Danish prospector at the Tucson Gem Show and says, “wanna trade?” The exchange is always Merlinite for Nuummite. Moonrise Crystals later sorted the stones into two categories, black and white Merlinite, and black Manganese.

I first met this source at the 2020 Tucson Gem Show. I was looking for a better source for Nuummite and found a new one that specialized in stones from Greenland and Northern Europe. The owner is an old prospector who has been in the business for almost 50 years and he has STORIES! We talked for 2 hours straight and he provided me with incredibly detailed information. Without reservation, I bought some of everything.

Manganese and Manganese Oxide are generic names used for a variety of Oxide minerals that are ores for the element magnesium. It is mined industrially and used for many commercial purposes, including making stainless steel resistant to rusting. It is usually black, but can be silver or brown. It provides the delicate veins that give Dendritic Agate its distinctive pattern, and it is often intergrown with pink Rhodonite.
