Merlinite
Energy Vibrations

Merlinite is a rare combination of Quartz and Manganese Oxide that comes from New Mexico. Now imagine an old miner heaping rough Merlinite into a bucket. Once a year he gets together with another miner that he's known for decades, "wanna trade?" they ask each other. It's the same trade every year, a bit of Merlinite for a bit of Nuummite from Greenland. The rough Merlinite is then sent to a lapidary to be drum polished into tumbled stones. Along the way, small pieces are chipped off. Rather than throw these small pieces away as waste, they are carefully sorted from the gravel and strung into bracelets.

Ethically Sourced

Merlinite from United States

When we know better, we do better. Ethical sourcing is a constantly evolving process. If the original sourcing for the stone still passes Moonrise Crystals’ current standards, it will be restocked as soon as possible. If the original sourcing is no longer acceptable, it will be restocked when/if a better supplier can be found.

This Merlinite comes from a small claim in New Mexico, USA. The miner has been working his claim for decades using hand tools and small machinery. It has a low environmental impact and is relatively low risk for the miner.  This Merlinite was traded, rather than sold.  Every year the miner from New Mexico brings a 5 gallon bucket of rough Merlinite to the Danish prospector at the Tucson Gem Show and says, “wanna trade?”  The exchange is always Merlinite for Nuummite.

This gem dealer is a Danish prospector. He runs a small one-man wholesale business. He prospects for stones across northern Europe and Greenland. Rough stones are sent to China to be drum-tumbled. Factory conditions are safe for workers.

I first met this source at the 2020 Tucson Gem Show. I was looking for a better source for Nuummite and found a new one that specialized in stones from Greenland and Northern Europe. The owner is an old prospector who has been in the business for almost 50 years and he has STORIES! We talked for 2 hours straight and he provided me with incredibly detailed information. Without reservation, I bought some of everything.

Merlinite Healing, Mineralogy, and History

Merlinite is a tradename for a fusion of white Quartz and black Managnese oxide.  Originally, this name was only used for crystals mined in New Mexico, USA.  However, a similar deposit has since been found in Cornwall, Great Britain and in Eskişehir, Turkey.  Cornwall is closely associated with the legendary Merlin and was the birthplace of King Arthur.  Merlinite is a wonderful stone for modern day shamans, druids and other forms of Old Magic.  The combination of light and dark, black and white, helps us to explore these same dualities with courage and wisdom.  Merlinite also encourages life-long-learning and the special bond between teachers and mentors […]
