Supply Chain for Rainbow Moonstone

These Moonstone were mined by Selma, a member of the Tanzanian Women Miners Association.  The mine has a low environmental impact and prioritizes safety.  Selma is proud of having completed a Financial Literacy class given by Pact, an international nonprofit focused on evidence-based, data-driven solutions for human development.

This is a woman-owned company that is one of the selling partners of Moya Gems, a responsible miner-to-market gemstone collaboration.  Its mission is to empower women miners, helping them work safely and improve their financial security by accessing consistent fair trade market opportunities.  In particular, it works closely with the Tanzanian Women Miners Association.  Moya means “heart” in Kiswahili, the dominate language in Tanzania.

I have known Moya Gems and some of their selling partners since 2019 because we attend the same conferences on responsible and sustainable jewelry.  They serve the fine gemstone market and so didn’t have anything that would be suitable for my store.  That changed in 2023 when Moya launched a small pilot program for mid and lower-value gems with the Tanzanian Women Miner’s Association.  Normally these stones are sold individually, but I needed a small pile of gems, enough to fill my bowl.  Only one stone was a match for my needs, a beautiful collection of Moonstones.

Female Miner Icon ethical crystal standards

Women miners face the same workplace dangers as male miners, but have many additional challenges.  The mining industry has some of the highest rates of sexual harassment as well as one of the largest gender pay gaps.  In many countries there are superstitions that it is “bad luck” for women to work underground.

Nevertheless, women continue to mine.  In some rural areas, mining may even be the most profitable way for women to earn an income to support themselves and their families.  All of our women-mined crystals come from sources that focus on safety and economic empowerment. Learn more

Rainbow Moonstone Healing, Mineralogy, and History

Published May 2014  •  Updated August 2024  •  Read Time: 7 minutes
Moonstone is an ancient name for a variety of iridescent Feldspar minerals.  They are typically white stones with a silvery-white, blue or full prismatic rainbow that shines on the surface.  They can also be black or orange, with a silvery-white shimmer.  Sunstones are the same minerals, the difference is that they are reliably orange stones with a golden or orange iridescence.  Moonstones have been linked to the moon and to goddess energy for centuries, making it a particularly popular stone for exploring feminine energies.  It is one of the most powerful stones for female fertility and is recommended during pregnancy as well as labor & delivery.
