Supply Chain for Moonstone Tourmaline

This Moonstone Tourmaline comes from artisanal miners in India. “Moonstone” is a name given to a variety of iridescent feldspar minerals. This Moonstone is likely Adularia. Artisanal mining for transparent Moonstone gems like this is done in vertical shafts with a low environmental impact.

This lapidary hand-polishes stones in Mumbai, India. It is owned by two long-time friends and business partners. Unusual for India, factory workers have safe conditions and are paid fairly. It is also an exporter and sells exclusively at large gem shows.

I first met this source at the 2017 Denver Gem Show. Our first encounter was short since it was my last day of shopping and I had already spent most of my budget, but their polished stock was the highest quality I had ever seen. A few months later, we met again in Tucson and this time I made sure to visit them at the beginning of the show!

In 2019, I was able to sit down with both owners and have a lengthy conversation about sourcing. Unlike most lapidaries, they were willing to speak with me in-depth about how they ensure their business is ethical. We talked about individual mines in India as well as how they source from other countries. We also talked about how they treat their own workers and about the links between business, karma, and God. Their willingness to talk and their pleasure at the conversation made me eager to develop and deepen this relationship.

Moonstone Tourmaline Healing, Mineralogy, and History

Published September 2014  •  Updated August 2024  •  Read Time: 5 minutes
Moonstone Tourmaline is a fabulous combination stone.  Scientifically its what’s known as a Pegmatite, an igneous rock with large well-formed crystals.  It is mostly white Orthoclase, better known as Moonstone, and Schorl, or Black Tourmaline.  This combination has been found in several locations, but most of the specimens on the market come from an area near the border of India and Pakistan.  Energetically, it combines the best of two individual minerals and is particularly good for balancing male/female and yin/yang energies.  It is also a fantastic choice for travelers who want to seek out new horizons while also being safe along the way.
