Ethical Sourcing Requires Transparency

Supply Chain for Moss Agate

This Moss Agate comes from artisanal miners in Maharashtra, India. Artisanal mining for agates is largely unregulated, but typically has a low environmental impact and is relatively low risk for miners.

This lapidary hand-polishes stones in Mumbai, India. It is a woman-owned and family-run business. Factory workers are paid fairly. The Lapidary is also an exporter that sells at gem shows in the United States and Japan.

I first met this source at the 2014 Tucson Gem Show. It was my first buying trip for my own store and I was nervous. Most lapidary owners were brisk and impatient with my questions, especially when I asked about the mines and the supply chains. But one man stood out to me as particularly patient and kind. He had been a wholeseller for over twenty years, yet he was happy to meet someone brand-new to the industry.

He took time to talk to me about the stones. They came from his home country of India and he was able to tell me exactly which state or territory each one came from and some of the conditions at the individual mines. When I told him that I wanted to source ethically, he said that it would be difficult, but that it was a worthwhile challenge. He made me feel like I could succeed, both at ethical sourcing and at being a business owner. I looked forward to a long business relationship with him. Sadly, he died suddenly in 2016.

I stayed in touch with his family and in 2017 met his wife, teenage daughter, and his father. This three-generation family has picked up the pieces and learned how to run the business. His wife had never worked before, but she gracefully stepped into her new role as a business owner. Her father-in-law offers practical and moral support, but makes sure that everyone knows that SHE is the boss and that checks should be written directly to her. The family continues to be supportive of my efforts to ethically source. More than any other lapidary, they are willing to speak openly with me about the difficult parts of the industry. They have invited me to visit them in India, to visit the mines and their lapidary. The daughter is now a GIA (Gemological Institute of America) Graduate and is interested in reiki and other healing modalities. As she has grown up, she has become increasingly concerned about ethical issues.

Moss Agate Healing, Mineralogy, and History

Moss Agate is a beautiful Agate with delicate green dendrites enclosed in colorless translucent silica.  Scientifically, this is actually a Chalcedony, but the name Moss Agate is widely recognized.  Most of the specimens on the market are from India, but it can also be found in central Europe, Uruguay and in the United States.  Moss Agate has a very sensible and practical energy, making it ideal for healers.  It is particularly recommended for pregnancy and labor & delivery to ensure a safe journey for mother and baby.  Moss Agate is also a wonderful addition to gardens, kitchens, and anywhere a witch might cultivate magic. I love my new crystals. Thank you as always for your gifts, your efforts, and the education you provide.

This moss agate stone is even more beautiful in person, the contrast between the translucent and opaque parts of the stone give it depth and its a stunning piece to gaze at and hold. Julie selected the most perfect stone (I explained what I’d be using it for) and told her I would trust her intuition and I was not disappointed, it’s absolutely perfect! Excellent quality, the real deal, and has amazing energy. Love this!

  3. Audrey P (Vermont)

Thank you for the agate and quartz and garnet. I especially like the additional pictures and written info. It is a nice reminder of each stone’s energy and light.

  4. Beth S. (Kentucky)

I’m absolutely delighted with all three of them. They’re all beautiful and all three are even more gorgeous when held in direct Sunlight. The earthy green, cloudy white and clear quartz in the Moss Agate are wonderfully dimensional, and the way they flow diagonally through the stone really does look like the movement of a stream. I love the substantial feel of this stone in my hand, and it’s got a spectacularly glittery tiny druzy cave!

  5. Andrea L. (Minnesota)

Gorgeous! Moss agate is my favorite. I asked her to send me pictures so I could pick 2 more out myself and she did. Super nice and helpful.

  6. Josefin S (Germany)

I always feel very safe and good about ordering from you, thank you for providing such high-quality crystals, they truly are medicine. The Moss Agate is the “strongest” stone I have encountered so far. It almost instantly helped me make contact with and release very stressful memories and feelings. Because it’s a disk, it’s great to grip very tightly with both hands and then I just held on for dear life. It was like the stone redirected everything I was sending it, so that I could let it go. Quite amazing. Again, thank you for the work you’re doing, these stones are so helpful.

Very high quality crystal, shopping with Julie is always a great experience.

  8. Morgan L (North Carolina)

The one you gave me has been such a powerful device to connect her to the forest and the fairies. My disk has already been though incredible journeys with me. I am so grateful.

Palm stone size. So beautiful and soothing to hold.
