Healing Properties of Tangerine Quartz
Spiritual: Tangerine Quartz provides an exceptionally useful energy that is both grounding and hopeful. It is a wonderful crystal ally during difficult seasons of life. Tangerine Quartz encourages us to be honest and able to look directly at the source of our discomfort, so that we can make amends, heal and move forward. When necessary, it will also give us strength so we cut ties with whatever is no longer serving us. Tangerine Quartz helps us to stay connected to our own bodies and the Earth while engaging in high spiritual work or energetic traveling. It gives us a warm sense of security, so that we feel safe enough to do the important work we need to do. It lifts away feelings of shame, confusion and despair, replacing those energies with determination to do better and to play a positive role in the world. Tangerine Quartz gives us a keen discernment so that we can know truth and act accordingly. It is also a remarkable stone for Kundalini and shakti energies. Tangerine Quartz is attuned to the Root and Sacral Chakras and linked to the astrological signs of Aries, Aquarius. It is connected to the element of Earth and vibrates to the number 9.
Emotional: Tangerine Quartz has a strong, soothing energy, which can be very encouraging when we feel anxious or depressed. It helps us to see the silver lining around grey clouds and to get back up when we’ve fallen down. Tangerine Quartz encourages us to take a more practical approach to negative or overwhelming emotions. Rather than trying to understand or work through our emotions on a purely mental/emotional level, Tangerine Quartz asks us to first check if our basic physical and emotional needs are being met. For example, have we eaten and are we hydrated? Are we sleeping and exercising enough? Have we had positive social interactions recently? Tangerine Quartz gently but firmly reminds us that all these basic needs play a HUGE role in our emotional well-being. Tangerine Quartz invites us to make self-care a priority. It reassures us that negative emotions are a part of life that everyone experiences from time to time, but if we act sensibly they will soon pass.
Mental: Tangerine Quartz increases our self-confidence. It briskly removes any self-limitations we have placed on ourselves and shows us that we are more powerful than we give ourselves credit for. Tangerine Quartz helps us to better understand what motivates us, emotionally and in our actions, and then to use that knowledge to better set ourselves up for success. Tangerine Quartz asks us to be very honest with ourselves, because when truth blazes within us, we can make the greatest impact. It helps us to acknowledge any mistakes we have made and as well as times when our ignorance has caused harm to others. Tangerine Quartz pushes us to swiftly take proper responsibility and make amends. However, if we find ourselves getting stuck in feelings of guilt or shame, Tangerine Quartz gently and sensibly reminds us that those feelings don’t help us or anyone else. Rather than indulging in self-flagellation, it’s far more beneficial to simply learn from errors, evolve and be better. Tangerine Quartz helps us to apologize as needed and to stand up for ourselves when warranted.
Physical: Tangerine Quartz is used by metaphysical healers to treat the circulatory and adrenal glands. It is said to help the body absorb iron and form more red blood cells and bone marrow. Tangerine Quartz is also believed to be supportive for the liver and kidneys.
Always use wisdom when considering crystal therapies for healing.
Mineralogy of Tangerine Quartz
Color: Red-orange Hematite enclosed in transparent Quartz
Transparency: Transparent to opaque
Location: Tangerine Quartz is Hematite encased in Clear Quartz. While both Hematite and Clear Quartz are found in numerous deposits around the world. The combination that creates Tangerine Quartz, however, is much more rare, with marketable deposits found only in Brazil, India and Madagascar.
Rock Type: Tangerine Quartz is not a mineral, but rather a rock. An easy way to understand the difference is that rocks are like cookies and minerals are ingredients like flour or sugar. Many different minerals are used to create a rock! In the case of Tangerine Quartz, two minerals are combined, red Hematite, an Oxide mineral and Clear Quartz, a Silicate Mineral.
Formation: Tangerine Quartz is created when Clear Quartz has inclusions of Hematite inside it. While Hematite is more commonly known as a shiny silver mineral, when it is an inclusion it takes on a dusky red-orange color.
Mining: Hematite is the most important of all Iron ores, because it contains up to 70% pure Iron. It is also fairly abundant and relatively easy to mine. Most Hematite is mined in large pit mine operations, with the primary purpose of mining Iron. In the case of Tangerine Quartz, however, the deposits are much smaller, and the purpose of the mine is usually to extract a variety of Quartz minerals.
Enhancements: While Tangerine Quartz does occur naturally, this name and similar-sounding fruit names are often used to market synthetic man-made stones. See history tab for more information.
Synonyms: Hematite Quartz, Hematoid Quartz, Orange Elestial Quartz, Ferruginous Quartz. See history tab for more information
History of Tangerine Quartz
Tangerine Quartz is a relatively new crystal for the metaphysical community and so is not included in any of the ancient or medieval lapidaries, texts that describe gemstones and their powers. Tangerine Quartz is a popular marketing name for orange and red-orange Quartz. It is named for the sweet fruit whose color it sometimes resembles.
The first known reference to red-orange Quartz dates to the late 1800s, when a fine-grained Red Hematite Quartz was found in English iron mines. It was initially called “Scarlet Quartz” but that name soon fell out of fashion. Today reddish-orange Quartz is called Ferruginous Quartz by scientific collectors and Tangerine Quartz by metaphysical collectors. If it reddish-pink or reddish-purple, both scientific and metaphysical collectors will often refer to it as Strawberry Quartz.
In the 21st century, various fruit-inspired names have been given to synthetic man-made stones. These synthetic stones are usually easy to identify. They tend to have an exceptionally-vibrant color and are often translucent or coated with a rainbow sheen. In some cases, they are made from regular Clear Quartz, such as in the case of these crystal points. At other times, the entire “crystal” will be made from glass or similar materials.
Recently tumbled Tangerine Quartz has been re-branded as “Elestial Quartz.” Elestial Quartz can come in a variety of colors but the color is usually muddy and mixed. What distinguishes this crystal is the shape of the rough formation. Elestial Quartz has multiple natural terminations and etchings on the face of the crystal. Internally it may grow as layers of Quartz and mineral inclusions, but the interior doesn’t have a consistent habit. Elestial Quartz is also known as Jacaré Quartz, Alligator Quartz, and Crocodile Quartz because the bumpy etchings on the face can resemble the reptiles’ skin. If Elestial Quartz is tumbled, it loses the main distinguishing characteristics, making it impossible to tell if a tumbled stone was originally a rough Elestial Quartz or not. Despite this problem, the name “Elestial Quartz” is often considered more attractive to the metaphysical community and so the stones are marketed accordingly.

I first met one of the owners of the lapidary at the Denver Gem Show in 2017. Our first encounter was short since it was my last day of shopping and I had already spent most of my budget. But their tumbled stock was the highest quality I had ever seen. A few months later we met again in Tucson and this time I made sure to see them at the beginning of the show!
In 2019, at the Tucson Gem Show, I was able to sit down with both owners and have a lengthy conversation about sourcing. Unlike most vendors, they were willing to speak with me in-depth about how they make sure their business is ethical. We talked about individual mines they source from both in India as well as how they source from other countries. We also talked about how they treat their own workers and about the links between business, karma and God. Their willingness to talk and their pleasure at the conversation makes me eager to continue to develop and deepen this relationship.
