Healing Properties of “New Jade”Serpentine

Spiritual: “New Jade”Serpentine is a phenomenal meditation stone, both grounding and elevating. It cleanses and aligns the entire Chakra field and opens up psychic channels. It is one of the best stones for exploring Kundalini energy and creating pathways for that energy to rise. Serpentine connects the heart and mind to the natural world and teaches patience. It is particularly useful for “Old Souls” who use earth magic for large-scale healing rituals. Serpentine is attuned to ALL the Chakras and linked to the astrological sign of Gemini. It is connected to the element of Earth and vibrates to the number 8.

Emotional: “New Jade” Serpentine has an exceptionally soothing energy. It gently helps us to release fear, particularly of change and the unknown, so we can be hopeful for the future. Serpentine also reveals how we can honor our own needs and desires, without feeling guilty. Serpentine encourages us to explore and develop healthy personal boundaries. It is particularly good for women who are healing from sexual trauma, or children who have experienced abuse. Serpentine reduces the strain of emotional manipulation, and replaces it with a desire to be honest and real. It also shows us that when approached correctly, sensuality and sexuality can be a pathway to peace and contentment.

Mental: “New Jade” Serpentine is a wisdom stone, which urges us to live in peace and make healthy choices. It encourages us to actively work to resolve conflicts, rather than negatively engaging or ignoring problems. Serpentine reminds us that we each have responsibility for our own lives and how our lives affect the larger world. This being so, we are called upon to become a little bit wiser and kinder every day.

Physical: “New Jade” Serpentine is a valuable healing tool for treating disorders in all areas of the body. In particular, it is used by metaphysical healers to treat diabetes and hypoglycemia. It is also said to reduce reduce cramps and menstrual pain, as well as emotional mood swings related to PMS. Serpentine is also believed to help heal sexual dysfunction and increase fertility.

Always use wisdom when considering crystal therapies for healing.

Many different minerals are used to create a rock! In the case of New Jade, it is a mixture of several different Serpentine minerals, mainly Antigorite, Chrysotile, and Lizardite.

Formation: “New Jade” is typically formed by a low-temperature metamorphic process, in which silica-poor ignenous rocks are oxidized and hydrolyzed until they transform into Serpentinite.

Mining: Serpentine minerals and Serpentinite Ore rocks are heavily mined, for both industrial and decorative uses.  For example, Chrysotile is a white Serpentine mineral that is the most important asbestos mineral, while “Serpentine Marble” a beautiful green Serpentinite ore rock is mined as huge slabs and polished to a high sheen.  The name “New Jade” can be given to any Serpentinite or Serpentine stone that is apple-green, easily carved and polished

Enhancements: All forms of Serpentine and Serpentinite, including “New Jade” are natural, enhanced only by tumbling, cutting, and polishing.

History of “New Jade” Serpentine

So-called “Jade” Buddha

“New Jade” is a type of Serpentine with a beautiful apple-green color and a soft surface that is relatively easy to carve and sculpt.  Real Jade, is one of two distinct minerals, Jadeite and Nephrite, with the latter being much more common.  High-quality Jadeite is perhaps the most prized gemstone in east-Asia, particularly China.  Deposits for Jadeite are increasingly being played out, yet the desire for “Jade” jewelry and statuary is only growing.  To meet this commercial demand, lapidaries are now using Serpentine instead, cleverly marketed as “New Jade”.

A great deal of the “Jade” figurines sold today are either “New Jade” Serpentine or plastic resins, rather than Nephrite or Jadeite.  At a casual glance, the easiest way to tell the difference between these four materials is to consider the price and weight.  “New Jade” will of course be heavier than plastic, but both of them will be relatively inexpensive.  Nephrite Jade figurines/jewelry will be more expensive, while Jadeite will be prohibitively costly. The more solid the coloring, the more likely it is that Serpentine or a plastic resin has been used.  Solid-colored Nephrite or Jadeite are much more rare and thus command a much higher price.

Sourcing Relationship

I first met the owner of the Hong Kong tumbling company at the 2014 Tucson Gem and Mineral Show.  A language barrier coupled with the quick pace of the gem show, makes it difficult to discuss sensitive or complicated topics.  Every year I speak with the owner, often asking questions about the same stones, but getting slightly different answers.  The communication problem makes me highly selective about which stones I will buy from her.  If the stone is from mainland China, and I can independently determine its likely mining origin, I will buy it since short supply chains are important.  If a stone is from another country, I am more cautious.

    I absolutely love it.

  2. Beth S. (Kentucky)

Though Serpentine “New Jade” may be used these days as a substitute for Jadeite, how distinctive this piece feels from a Jadeite gem I’ve had since 1970. This is the one I’ll go to when I really need grounding. It has a feeling of earth and home, yet of motion and simply knowing what to do to make good changes. I like the stripes within it when it’s held up to the light.
