Supply Chain for Onyx

This Onyx comes from Rjasthan, India. Artisanal mining for agates, including Onyx, is largely unregulated, but typically has a low environmental impact and is relatively low risk for miners.

This lapidary hand-polishes stones in Mumbai, India. It is owned by two long-time friends and business partners.  One of the owners used to work for the other person, but they got along so well that they ended up starting a new business together.  Unusual for India, factory workers have safe conditions and are paid fairly. It is also an exporter and sells exclusively at large gem shows.

I first met this source at the 2017 Denver Gem Show. Our first encounter was short since it was my last day of shopping and I had already spent most of my budget, but their polished stock was the highest quality I had ever seen. A few months later, we met again in Tucson and this time I made sure to visit them at the beginning of the show!

In 2019, I was able to sit down with both owners and have a lengthy conversation about sourcing. Unlike most lapidaries, they were willing to speak with me in-depth about how they ensure their business is ethical. We talked about individual mines in India as well as how they source from other countries. We also talked about how they treat their own workers and about the links between business, karma, and God. Their willingness to talk and their pleasure at the conversation made me eager to develop and deepen this relationship.  We continued to talk about these things, year after year.

In 2025, the business split apart.  The owners remain dear friends, but had different goals for the future.  Since I had an excellent relationship with both of them, I continued to do business with each of them and I am curious to see how their businesses will evolve over time.  This one is very heart-centered.  The owner is an emotional man with a soft heart and his focus is on the healing energy of the stones.  He is running the new business with a former employee from Nepal, who has now become an equal owner.

Onyx Healing, Mineralogy, and History

Onyx is a black stone that is sometimes described as a Chalcedony and sometimes as an Agate.  It can be pure black or striped black and white.  It is found naturally in a few locations, but many pieces have actually been dyed pure black!  In recent years, the name “onyx” is sometimes given to a variety of stones such as “Green Onyx” or “White Onyx”, but these are actually striped Calcites.  Historically, Onyx was thought to encourage frivolous behavior, but is now celebrated for its exceptionally sensible energy.  It has been used as a talisman during labor & delivery for centuries and is still used today as a good luck charm for a quick and easy birth.
