The crystals you sent me arrived last week and they are simply gorgeous. So vibrant and lovely each one had a resonance and I appreciated how well they were cared for. Truly special. Thank you.

Supply Chain for Prairie Tanzanite

This Prairie Tanzanite comes from a small-scale mine in Wyoming, USA.  The mining is focused on Green Jade, the Prairie Tanzanite is a secondary mineral.  The mining has a low environmental impact and conditions are safe for miners.

This lapidary drum tumbles stones in Cape Town, South Africa. It is a family business, founded by a father and passed on to his sons. Factory workers have safe conditions and are paid fairly. The lapidary sells primarily at two gemshows, one in the United States and the other in France.

I have been doing business with this source since 2014. They are the oldest tumbling company in the world and have more varieties, in more sizes, than any other known source. The company started in California in the 1950s and was eventually bought by a British immigrant who had young sons. Eventually the company moved to South Africa in order to be closer to the source of their best-selling stone and to have the legal rights to export it. The company is now run by the sons and their childhood best friend.

The current owners personally visit many small and large mines. To connect with artisanal miners in sub-Sahara Africa, they work with local Gem Dealers who travel far into the bush to buy from part-time miners. The majority of these Gem Dealers are women. Some, but not all, of their stones are labeled with country-of-origin. For those that aren’t, I ask the owners directly. As I’ve learned more about mining practices in individual countries, I have become increasingly selective about what I will purchase from them. However, they remain my preferred source for most of the stones I sell from sub-Sahara Africa.

Prairie Tanzanite Healing, Mineralogy, and History

Published May 2017  •  Updated August 2024  •  Read Time: 8 minutes
Tanzanite is a valuable blue-purple gemstone from Tanzania.  It was discovered in 1967 after a brush fire in cleared the plains below Mount Kilimanjaro.  The area was strew with brownish-red Zoisite and the heat from the flames created a chemical reaction that turned the stones blue-purple.  A few samples were sent to Tiffany & Co and the jewelry company branded them as “Tanzanites” and introduced them to the world.  The gem has a beautiful energy that unites the heart and mind to create a single wise and heart-centered purpose.   It helps us to stay the course, to adjust as necessary and to always keep learning.
