Healing Properties of Prasiolite

Spiritual: Prasiolite is a beautiful stone which inspires love and compassion. It helps us ground into the physical Earth while also connecting us with the magnificence of Divine Love. For anyone seeking a more authentic spiritual experience, Prasiolite can help us to open ourselves to the Mystery. It increases intuition whenever we are in alignment with Love and all that is Good. Prasiolite is a stone of transformation, inviting us to become more of what we truly are. Prasiolite is attuned to the Solar Plexus, Third Eye, Crown, and Heart Chakras and linked to the astrological signs of Virgo, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces. It is connected to the element of Earth and vibrates to the number 3.

Emotional: Prasiolite is a stone of compassion, particularly for one’s self. It helps us to accept ourselves and see our own inherent beauty and dignity. Prasiolite reminds us that to share love with ourselves and others is the greatest gift we can give. It is particularly good for anyone who struggles with self-esteem issues or is struggling to free one’s self from an emotionally abusive relationship. Prasiolite shows us that when we act out of True Love we act for the Highest Good, (and that can mean staying or going, changing or accepting). It reminds us that whatever decision brings us authentic peace is the right choice.

Mental: Prasiolite is a stone that unites logic and love. With it we can explore complex questions about love. For example, if love is kind how do we respond to people (including ourselves) who are not kind? Prasiolite teaches us that love is not just an emotion or a spiritual ideal, instead it is a conscious decision. We can choose to be kinder and more loving. We can choose to be with those people who respect and honor us. We can choose to do our personal work and grow as an individual. Prasiolite shows us the logical path to joy and prosperity.

Physical: Prasiolite is said to be a good stone for healing the physical heart as well as for healing the endocrine glands that help the body to stay balanced.  It is commonly used to treat eating disorders and digestion.

Always use wisdom when considering crystal therapies for healing.

Mineral Family: Prasiolite is the green variety of Quartz, which is in turn a Silicate mineral. Silicate minerals are the largest family of minerals, including more than 25% of all known minerals and 40% of all common minerals. In addition to being a major part of the Earth’s crust, Silicate minerals have also been found on the moon and in meteorites. Silicates are minerals which contain the elements Silicon (a light gray, shiny metal) and Oxygen (a colorless gas). Together, these two elements form a tetrahedron – a shape similar to a pyramid – with a Silicon atom in the center and Oxygen atoms at each of the four corners. These tetrahedra connect with other chemical structures, in six different ways, to form various minerals and rocks. There are six main groups of Silicate minerals, and these main groups are further subdivided into secondary subdivisions, such as Quartz and Feldspar. Quartz is a large mineral family in its own right and its members come in every shade of the rainbow. Colorless Quartz is called Clear Quartz or Rock Crystal. Yellow Quartz is Citrine. Green Quartz is Prasiolite. Brown Quartz is Smoky Quartz. Pink Quartz is, of course, Rose Quartz. The most highly prized variety of all is Amethyst, or purple Quartz. While Amethyst ranges from light violet to darkest purple, transparent crystals with a deep, rich, royal purple color are the most desirable.

Formation: Prasiolite is created when liquid magma from a volcanic explosion cools down and transforms into igneous rocks. During this cooling down period, silica acid bubbles shift from being a gas/liquid into a solid compound. The bubble becomes a hollow space in the igneous rock and the silica acid becomes Quartz crystals. Trace particles of iron within the silica acid give Prasiolite its green color, otherwise the silica acid would transform into Clear Quartz. The temperature at which the Quartz cools down determines the color, which can either be green, purple (Amethyst), or yellow (Citrine).

Mining: Natural Prasiolite is very rare, when it is found it is almost always as a secondary mineral within commercial Amethyst mines.

Enhancements: While Prasiolite does occur naturally, the vast majority of Prasiolites are heat-treated Amethysts. More than 200 years ago, it was discovered that when Amethyst and Smoky Quartz are carefully heated, they change color. This discovery gave mines and gem dealers a a way to transform low grade Amethyst and Smoky Quartz into a more desirable commodity. Usually Amethyst turns yellow when heated, becoming Citrine, in part due to the formation of iron oxides. Iron compounds with Fe3+ ions are often yellow or orange, whereas Fe2+ compounds are green. Today only a trained specialist can recognize the difference between burnt Prasiolites, which have subtle stripes, and natural Prasiolites which are slightly cloudy. On a chemical level there is no difference between natural and burnt Prasiolite, it is merely a matter of whether nature or man is responsible for the hot temperature. The vast majority of Prasiolite sold on the market is burnt.

Synonyms: Green Quartz, Vermarine, Lime Citrine, Green Amethyst (it is against the Federal Trade Commission Guidelines to call Prasiolite “green amethyst,” nevertheless the practice is very common)

History of Prasiolite

Prasiolite is a relatively “new” healing stone whose properties have only recently begun to be explored. As a result, it was not included in early lapidaries, texts which describe gemstones and their powers. However, many other types of Quartz have rich histories. It is certainly possible that Prasiolite may have used by indigenous cultures for ornaments as well as for healing and spiritual purposes.

Ethically Sourced Prasiolite

The Miners sell to a rough Gem Dealer/Exporter.

The Exporter sells to a Lapidary.

The Lapidary sells directly to Moonrise Crystals.

Moonrise Crystals sells directly to you.

The Supply Chain

The Supply Chain is clean and relatively short.

The Mine and the Lapidary are located in different countries, with one middleman involved.

The Mine

This Prasiolite is from Brazil, most likely from a small Amethyst mine.

The exact deposit is unknown but would have relatively safe conditions for workers.

The Lapidary

This Prasiolite was polished in Cape Town, South Africa.

The Lapidary is a family-owned business, founded by father and passed on to his sons.

Factory workers have safe conditions and are paid fairly.

The Lapidary is also the direct-importer & sells primarily at large gem shows.

Sourcing Relationship

I have been doing business with this source since 2014.  They are the oldest tumbling company in the world and have more varieties, in more sizes, than any other known source.  The company started in California in the 1950s and was eventually bought by a British immigrant who had young sons.  Eventually the company moved to South Africa in order to be closer to the source of their best-selling stone and to have the legal rights to export it.  The company is now run by the sons and their childhood best friend.

The current owners visit many small and industrial-size mines personally.  For artisanal-mined deposits in sub-Sahara Africa, the owners work with Gem Dealers who deal directly with the part-time miners.  The majority of these Gem Dealers are women.  Some, but not all, of their stones are labeled with country-of-origin.  For those that aren’t, I ask the owners directly.  As I’ve learned more about mining practices in individual countries, I have become increasingly selective about what I will purchase from them.  However, they remain my preferred source for most of the stones I sell from sub-Sahara Africa.
