Supply Chain for Tumbled Prehnite

This Prehnite comes from a small-scale mine in Wave Hill, Northern Territory, Australia.  Small-scale mining in Australia has a low environmental impact and is safe for miners.

This supplier is a family-owned mine and wholesaler in Perth, Australia.  They mine several minerals in Western Australia and trade with mine owners in other parts of Australia.  Some of their stones are sold directly to lapidaries to be polished and re-sold, while others are sent to lapidaries to be polished and then returned to the family business.

I met this supplier at the 2023 Denver Show when a huge polished Tiger Iron standing next to glossy photos of Australian wildlife caught my eye.  A quick glance confirmed that almost every stone on the table was from Western Australia.  I introduced myself and was delighted to meet a friendly miner.  While I often have to casually tiptoe around ethical questions, he and I struck up a rapport and were able to speak freely.  The booth wasn’t busy so there was time to talk.  We discussed environmental protection in the Outback and mining reclamation projects.  He shared how the various Australian mine owners do business with each other and was able to confirm several of my assumptions and suspicions.  He’s a lovely human and I am excited to do business with him for many years to come.

Fun Fact!

This Prehnite is mined on a huge Basalt plateau that was created during a major volcanic event in Northern Australia.   It wasn’t a single eruption, but rather many eruptions one after another, along with earthquakes and other geological phenomena. To get a sense for the scale of the lava flow: the plateau is 50,000 km2 and 1 km deep.  By contrast, the last big eruption on Hawaii in 2018 had a lava flow of 35 km The volcanic event took place in the Early Cambrian, approximately 500 million years ago. The Prehnite would have formed quickly inside the cavities of the volcanic rocks, so your gem should be about that same age.

Prehnite Healing, Mineralogy, and History

Published May 2014  •  Updated August 2024  •  Read Time: 6 minutes
Prehnite is a green or yellowish silicate mineral that grows in little globes in volcanic rocks or sometimes as stalactites clinging like icicles to the roof of caves.  In some locations, the Prehnite is intergrown with fine epidote needles.  Prehnite was first described in the mid-18th century when a Dutch colony was found at the Cape of Good Hope.  Today, Prehnite from South Africa or nearby countries is sometimes sold as “Cape Emeralds.”  Prehnite has a very relaxing and loving energy that creates a sanctuary-like atmosphere.  It is a wonderful addition to gardens and for use in feng shui.  It is an excellent choice for healing spaces as well as a good friend to take along to therapy.
