This Prehnite comes from a mine in South Africa.  It may be a byproduct of gold mining.

This lapidary drum tumbles stones in Cape Town, South Africa. It is a family business, founded by a father and passed on to his sons. Factory workers have safe conditions and are paid fairly. The lapidary sells primarily at two gemshows, one in the United States and the other in France.

I have been doing business with this source since 2014. They are the oldest tumbling company in the world and have more varieties, in more sizes, than any other known source. The company started in California in the 1950s and was eventually bought by a British immigrant who had young sons. Eventually the company moved to South Africa in order to be closer to the source of their best-selling stone and to have the legal rights to export it. The company is now run by the sons and their childhood best friend.

The current owners personally visit many small and large mines. To connect with artisanal miners in sub-Sahara Africa, they work with local Gem Dealers who travel far into the bush to buy from part-time miners. The majority of these Gem Dealers are women. Some, but not all, of their stones are labeled with country-of-origin. For those that aren’t, I ask the owners directly. As I’ve learned more about mining practices in individual countries, I have become increasingly selective about what I will purchase from them. However, they remain my preferred source for most of the stones I sell from sub-Sahara Africa.

Prehnite is a green or yellowish silicate mineral that grows in little globes in volcanic rocks or sometimes as stalactites clinging like icicles to the roof of caves.  In some locations, the Prehnite is intergrown with fine epidote needles.  Prehnite was first described in the mid-18th century when a Dutch colony was found at the Cape of Good Hope.  Today, Prehnite from South Africa or nearby countries is sometimes sold as “Cape Emeralds.”  Prehnite has a very relaxing and loving energy that creates a sanctuary-like atmosphere.  It is a wonderful addition to gardens and for use in feng shui.  It is an excellent choice for healing spaces as well as a good friend to take along to therapy.     At first touch the Prehnite already felt charged. Its green reminds me of a spring day, and it has swirls in it, like a breeze breaking up clouds so they flow freely. It has a very subtle hint of shimmer in some lights.
