Supply Chain for Pyrite

This Pyrite comes from Huanzala Mine, an industrial lead-zinc mine in Ancash, Peru.  The mine is the source for much of the high-quality Pyrite from Peru.  What few people know is that the Pyrite is almost always illegally mined.  Artisanal miners paying the guards to look the other way and the miners extract the fool’s gold at night when the mine is closed.  The illegal mining is very profitable and the leaders that control it are considered “the Pyrite Mafia.”  By contrast, this Pyrite is fully legal. My supplier has the only legal right to mine Pyrite at Huanzala Mine.  He and his family have been violently threated for working against the illegal mining mafia, but bravely continue to choose the legal route.

This mine and lapidary is a small business in Peru. The main business is the polishing factory which focuses on Peruvian stones.  The owner was a biologist and environmental activist in his first career, and brings this passion for ethics to his current business.  He is particularly proud of his legal contractssafety standards, and worker’s compensation package.  He also has a small mining claim which he mines in the most environmentally-conscious way possible.

I met this source online during the pandemic in 2021.  The owner sent out an email to crystal stores around the world introducing his company.  While most of the email talked about the quality and price of the stones, I was immediately drawn to his fair trade principles, which included legal contracts, health insurance and pension plans, safety standards, etc.  This kind of language is very rare!  I immediately contacted him and place an order.  We have had many conversations on What’s App about ethical issues in Peru and around the world.  I love speaking with him because he thinks like a scientist and an environmental activist.  So we don’t have to tread cautiously, we can speak boldly.

He asked if I thought the world would support an ethical crystal mine.  I told him I couldn’t speak for the world, but that I personally would.  A few weeks later I became a financial investor.  My first crystal order would include Black Tourmaline and Epidote that came from “my” ethical mine.

Did you know that Pyrite from Peru is almost always illegally mined?

The supply chain is controlled by a local criminal group that makes a profit off the Fool’s Gold.  Illegal mining is actually quite common for healing crystals.  The problem with Pyrite is that it is also used for money laundering and to smuggle cocaine abroad.  At Moonrise Crystals we source from the only legal supplier and can guarantee these Pyrite’s have clean sourcing and pure energy.

Pyrite Healing, Mineralogy, and History

Published January 2015  •  Updated August 2024  •  Read Time: 6 minutes
Pyrite is a sulfide mineral that is nicknamed “Fool’s Gold” because it is easy to confuse with that most precious metal.  But look closer and you will soon discover they are very different indeed!  Pyrite is a heavy mineral with a brassy yellow color, but it is nowhere near as heavy as pure Gold and when seen side-by-side it doesn’t have that unmistakable buttery yellow shine. Those seeking only earthly riches may be fooled, but those seeking something higher may find a good friend in Pyrite.  It is a strong ally in the search for enlightenment and gives us strength and courage to do the hard mental work to see the Truth that is often hidden between greed and lies.
