Healing Properties of Rose Quartz
Spiritual: Rose Quartz awakens unconditional love and compassion inside us and asks us to use that energy to bless the world. It encourages us to ask the hard questions and to realize the simple answer. Who deserves our love? Who deserves mercy? Who deserves kindness, dignity and goodwill? All of us. Yes, all of us. This kindness is not only for other people; everyone of us, including YOU, are part of all of us. Rose Quartz asks us to cherish and uplift all beings. It has a warm and bright energy that acts like a hug and a smile, and gives us a feeling of deep contentment and bright possibility. When held during prayer or meditation Rose Quartz dissolves boundaries, allowing us to more fully embrace divine union and Nirvana. Rose Quartz’s energy resonates with the profound teachings of heart-centered spiritual masters, such as Jesus Christ, Kwan Yin, and Amma. Rose Quartz is attuned to the Heart Chakra and linked to the astrological signs of Taurus and Libra. It is connected to the element of Water and vibrates to the number 7.
Emotional: Rose Quartz is the quintessential stone for all things related to love – including self love, romantic love, family and platonic love, as well as community and global love. If you need a love stone for any purpose under the sun, Rose Quartz will gladly assist you. It gleefully helps us to attract new people to love and encourages us to welcome newcomers into our lives. Rose Quartz happily teaches us how to nurture our existing relationships. It shows us that when we love people unconditionally, we allow them to breath deeply and to let their true selves come out to play. With love, all things become possible. If our hearts have been broken, Rose Quartz wraps us up in a cocoon of love and allows us to work through our emotions at our own speed. It asks us to believe that eventually love will find us again. It whispers into our heart that the past is the past, our future has delicious adventures still in store. Rose Quartz celebrates every time our heart is brave and generous. It encourages us to continually GIVE love joyfully and wisely and to continually receive LOVE with grace and delight.
Mental: Rose Quartz sings of forgiveness and compassion. It can help us to intellectually understand where another person is coming from and why a situation has occurred. With this understanding, we can then truly accept “what is” and know what to do next. Rose Quartz encourages us to respond to injustice with clear communication and nonviolent protests. But if violence erupts, Rose Quartz pushes to look beyond the violence and into the aching heart that is reacting from fear and anger. Rose Quartz reminds us that it is a relatively easy thing to love those who are similar to us, who behave the way we wish and whom we already love. It is a far greater challenge to love the stranger, the enemy and anyone who provokes fear or anger in our own heart. But what else are we here for, if not to learn how to love and to become a force of goodness and Light? Sometimes the lessons will be sweet and sometimes the lessons will be challenging. But the answer to all lessons is the same – Love. Rose Quartz shows us that the Highest Good is always served by acting out of real love, which may manifest as self-love or as love for another.
Physical: Rose Quartz is used by metaphysical healers to stabilize and strengthen the physical heart. It is also commonly used to treat sexual disorders, especially those with a psychosomatic origin. Because of its soft and gentle nature, Rose Quartz is often used to help treat physical issues in infants, children, and those nearing the end of life.

Mineralogy of Rose Quartz
Mineral Family: Tectosilicate

Location: The most important Rose Quartz deposits are located in Brazil and Madagascar. Additional Rose Quartz deposits are located in India, Mozambique, Namibia, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
Mineral Family: Rose Quartz is the pink variety of Quartz, which is in turn a Silicate mineral. Silicate minerals are the largest family of minerals, including more than 25% of all known minerals and 40% of all common minerals. In addition to being a major part of the Earth’s crust, Silicate minerals have also been found on the moon and in meteorites. Silicates are minerals which contain the elements Silicon (a light gray shiny metal) and Oxygen (a colorless gas). Together, these two elements form a tetrahedra – a shape similar to a pyramid – with a Silicon atom in the center and Oxygen atoms at each of the three corners. These tetrahedras connect with other chemical structures, in six different ways, to form various minerals and rocks. There are six main groups of Silicate minerals, and these main groups are further subdivided into secondary subdivisions, such as Quartz and Feldspar. Quartz is a large mineral family in its own right and its members come in every shade of the rainbow. Colorless Quartz is called Clear Quartz or Rock Crystal. Yellow Quartz is Citrine. Green Quartz is Prasiolite. Brown Quartz is Smoky Quartz. Pink Quartz is, of course, Rose Quartz. The most highly prized variety of all is Amethyst, or purple Quartz.
Formation: Rose Quartz is created when liquid magma from a volcanic explosion cools down and transforms into igneous rocks. During this cooling down period, silica acid bubbles shift from being a gas/liquid into a solid compound. The bubble becomes a hollow space in the igneous rock and the silica acid becomes Quartz crystals. Trace particles of iron, manganese, or titanium within the silica acid give Rose Quartz its pink color, otherwise the silica acid would transform into Clear Quartz.
Mining: In a few locations, Rose Quartz is found in large enough deposits to justify commercial mining. More often, Rose Quartz is a secondary mineral found within other commercial mines.
Enhancements: All Rose Quartz is natural, enhanced only by tumbling, cutting, and polishing.
Enhancements: All Rose Quartzes are natural, enhanced only by tumbling, cutting, and polishing.
History of Rose Quartz
Rose Quartz was not included as a distinct mineral in most early lapidaries, texts which describe gemstones and their powers. However archaeological evidence reveals that Rose Quartz has been used to make jewelry since long before the dawn of civilization. The oldest known example are Rose Quartz beads found in Mesopotamia (Iraq) which have dated to around 7000 BCE!
The earliest lapidary reference to Rose Quartz is from the Roman Era, where the pink gem was used as a seal to signify ownership in Italy and purportedly also believed to prevent aging in Egypt. Rose Quartz was not specifically mentioned again in European lapidaries until the modern era.
Native American tribes occasionally carved amulets out of Rose Quartz, which they referred to as the “love stone.” According to reports, the tribes believed that Rose Quartz helped to balance the emotions, soften anger, and ease disappointment.

I first met the owner of the lapidary at the 2006 Gem and Mineral show in Tucson, Arizona. At that time I was working for a crystal shop in Utah and was at Tucson primarily as a “pack mule” to help carry all the stones. It was generally agreed by our crew that the “Madagascar” tent contained the most beautiful stones in the entire show.
In 2014, I embarked on my first buying trip for Moonrise Crystals. The company I knew of only as “Madagascar” was the one company I was most determined to find and buy from. This lapidary company only sells at a handful of major gem shows. The only time they are in the USA is for the Tucson Gem Show. During the rest of the year, the lapidary hand polishes their stock and also does charity work in their local community. They continue to offer some of the most beautiful tumbled stones in the industry and are among my favorite suppliers.
In 2019, Moonrise Crystals and the Madagascar lapidary company joined together to financially support a rural school in Madagascar.
