Healing Properties of Sand Dollar Fossil

Spiritual: Sand Dollar Fossil offers a unique link between Earth and Water energies, a potent combination which can lead to personal growth on many levels! It invites us to live more magically – to dare the impossible and to dream big. But it also encourages us to do the work to make our dreams come true. Fortune favors the bold, and Sand Dollar Fossil teaches us to to deserve victory and to feel worthy of receiving great abundance. Sand Dollar Fossil is linked to the Root and Sacral Chakras and attuned to the astrological signs of Virgo and Pisces. It is connected to the elements of Water; and vibrates to the numbers 2 and 8.

Emotional: Sand Dollar Fossil offers us a fresh start, a chance to shake off our old “baggage” and step into a beautiful new life! It has a playful energy inviting us to let our worries go and allow our hearts to be young and innocent again. Sand Dollar Fossil can also help us to dive deep within; to explore our emotions better, and to recognize emotional patterns that no longer serve us so that they can be released. It also reminds us to actively connect on a regular basis with our dearest friends and family members. Sand Dollar Fossil helps us to recognize and celebrate how lucky we truly are.

Mental: Sand Dollar Fossil is a wonderful stone for stimulating new ideas, from artistic creativity to business strategies. It helps us to invest further in our own success. It is particularly helpful for anyone who suffers from negative financial beliefs, and can help us to create more positive thought patterns around money, abundance, and our own worthiness. Sand Dollar Fossil helps us to realize that money is nothing more than a tool, and wielded correctly it can bring great joy and peace to ourselves as well as to others.

Physical: Sand Dollars are the only creature that can clone themselves for purely defensive reasons, rather than reproductive.  They split into two smaller sand dollars when the sense predators are nearby.  This makes it a fascinating talisman for anyone who is immunocompromised and needs to take extra precautions.  It helps us to see the early signs and warnings, long before a problem develops and to follow a “better safe than sorry” philosophy.  If other people are critical of our precautions, Sand Dollar fossil shields us from self-doubt and encourages us to be logical rather than emotional.  If the signs of danger are there, only a fool would ignore them!  Sand dollar fossils also make fun talismans for the feet.

Always use wisdom when considering crystal therapies for healing.

Rock Type: Fossilized Sand Dollar is the preserved remains of an ancient species of Sea Urchin.

Formation: Fossils are remnants of organisms living in a past geological age. Most are preserved in fine-grained sedimentary rock such as limestone or shale. Typically the soft parts of the organism decompose and the hard parts, such as shells and skeletons, remain and gradually turn into stone. In the case of Sand Dollars, they are the skeletal remains of Sea Urchins that have been fossilized in an unaltered state. Marine scientists have distinguished 79 different species of Sea Urchins throughout history, 29 of these species can still be found alive today, while 49 species are known only in the fossil record.

Mining: Fossils may be on the surface of the Earth or uncovered in any kind of mining environment. Except in the case of extremely valuable fossils, such as dinosaur bones, most fossils are mined as a secondary find, rather than as the primary purpose.

History of Sand Dollar Fossils

Sand Dollar Fossils are a relatively “new” healing stone whose properties have only recently begun to be explored. As a result, they were not included in early lapidaries, texts which describe gemstones and their powers.

Sea Urchin
“Regular” Sea Urchin

Sand Dollars are the internal skeletons of Sea Urchins. Most of the time when we think of Sea Urchins we picture a brightly colored marine invertebrate, a ball with thick spines on the ocean floor. (Just waiting to be stepped on by a careless swimmer.) These spiky marine animals are “regular Sea Urchins” a broad category which includes hundreds of distinct species. Most of them live in the open water or on reefs.

Irregular Sea Urchin / Sand Dollar
“Irregular” Sea Urchin

A specialized sub-category of Sea Urchins are the “irregular” species. These are the few dozen species who are smooth and flat. They live in shallow water with sandy bottoms. Their spines are very short and so they appear “fuzzy” to the human eye. These spines are specially designed to move around sediment, and push food towards the creature’s mouth, located in the center of the petal-like pattern. These irregular Sea Urchins are often brightly colored, ranging between purple, blue, and green.

When these irregular Sea Urchins die, their soft outer body (the “fuzzy” hair) decomposes, leaving only the skeleton behind. These skeletons routinely wash up on nearby sandy beaches, much like shells do, and are bleached sandy white by the sun. Occasionally, these skeleton “Sand Dollars” will be fossilized after being covered with sediment.

Sand dollarThere have been 78 species of Irregular Sea Urchins, 49 of which are extinct and known only by their fossil remains. Most skeletal remains are commonly referred to as “Sand Dollars,” a name given by English-speaking beachcombers who were reminded of old silver American or Spanish dollars. Some species, who are not quite so flat, are called “Sea Biscuits,” and likewise species found in coastal New Zealand are known as “Sea Cookies” and “Snapper Biscuits.” Presumably because they are the same size and shape as little bite-size cookies! The skeletons that wash up on South African beaches, are called “Pansy Shells,” because their five “petals” reminded beachcombers of pansy flowers.

dovesIn addition to giving them their names, beachcombers are also responsible for many of the legends associated with Sand Dollars. They have been associated with mermaids, seen as loose change, carelessly dropped by merfolk, which, when found by humans gives us access to a new kind of “magical abundance.” Sand Dollars have also been described as the currency used by the citizens of Atlantis, after the civilization plunged into the sea. Christian beachcombers saw rich symbolism in the star shape, linking it to the Star of Bethlehem and Jesus’ birth, as well the Easter Lily and Jesus’ Resurrection. When some Sand Dollars are broken, five little “doves” (the mouth of the Sea Urchin) fall out. These are the “doves” of peace and joy, flying out to spread good will and cheer.

Sourcing Relationship

I first met the owner of the lapidary at the 2006 Gem and Mineral show in Tucson, Arizona. At that time I was working for a crystal shop in Utah and was at Tucson primarily as a “pack mule” to help carry all the stones. It was generally agreed by our crew that the “Madagascar” tent contained the most beautiful stones in the entire show.

In 2014, I embarked on my first buying trip for Moonrise Crystals.  The company I knew of only as “Madagascar” was the one company I was most determined to find and buy from. This lapidary company only sells at a handful of major gem shows.  The only time they are in the USA is for the Tucson Gem Show. During the rest of the year, the lapidary hand polishes their stock and also does charity work in their local community.  They continue to offer some of the most beautiful tumbled stones in the industry and are among my favorite suppliers.

In 2019, Moonrise Crystals and the Madagascar lapidary company joined together to financially support a rural school in Madagascar.

I placed a special order for some crystals with Julie for my niece who graduated with a BSc. in Marine Biology. Julie was so responsive and helpful in creating a beautiful and unique collection for my niece. She even went out to the ocean to see what “gift” the ocean would provide and sent along a lovely piece of coral as well. Julie is very knowledgeable and the crystals are gorgeous – with most included that I would not have thought of! She also put in detailed descriptions of each crystal. You cannot go wrong! Julie is so passionate about her work and it shows from every angle! Thank you, Julie for your kindness, thoroughness and patience — and for your huge collection of amazing crystals!
