Ethically Sourced

Sardonyx from India

When we know better, we do better. Ethical sourcing is a constantly evolving process. If the original sourcing for the stone still passes Moonrise Crystals’ current standards, it will be restocked as soon as possible. If the original sourcing is no longer acceptable, it will be restocked when/if a better supplier can be found.

This Sardonyx comes from artisanal miners in India. The exact deposit is unknown, but most likely it was in Pradesh.  Artisanal mining for agates is largely unregulated, but typically has a low environmental impact and is relatively low risk for miners.

This lapidary hand-polishes stones in Mumbai, India. It is owned by two long-time friends and business partners. Unusual for India, factory workers have safe conditions and are paid fairly. It is also an exporter and sells exclusively at large gem shows.

I first met this source at the 2017 Denver Gem Show. Our first encounter was short since it was my last day of shopping and I had already spent most of my budget, but their polished stock was the highest quality I had ever seen. A few months later, we met again in Tucson and this time I made sure to visit them at the beginning of the show!

In 2019, I was able to sit down with both owners and have a lengthy conversation about sourcing. Unlike most lapidaries, they were willing to speak with me in-depth about how they ensure their business is ethical. We talked about individual mines in India as well as how they source from other countries. We also talked about how they treat their own workers and about the links between business, karma, and God. Their willingness to talk and their pleasure at the conversation made me eager to develop and deepen this relationship.

Sardonyx Healing, Mineralogy, and History

Published July 2014  •  Updated February 2024  •  Read Time: 7 minutes
Sardonyx is a famous variety of banded Agate.  The best quality pieces have three distinct colors: Sard (better known as Carnelian), Onyx, and Snow Quartz.  Sometimes the colors form stripes, other times they are mixed together more randomly.  Because the color contrast is so vivid, Sardonyx is often carved in relief, so that one color stands out from the background.  Energetically, Sardonyx is a mixture of the bright confidence of Carnelian with the steady grounding of Onyx.  It is a wonderful choice for couples who want to ensure their relationship is happy and healthy.  Sardonyx would be an usual but very thoughtful wedding gift.
