Ethically Sourced

Septarian Nodule from Peru

When we know better, we do better. Ethical sourcing is a constantly evolving process. If the original sourcing for the stone still passes Moonrise Crystals’ current standards, it will be restocked as soon as possible. If the original sourcing is no longer acceptable, it will be restocked when/if a better supplier can be found.

This Septarian Nodule comes from artisanal miners in Peru.  The exact deposit is unknown, but most likely had a low environmental impact and would have been relatively low risk for miners.

This mine and lapidary is a family-run business in Peru that specializes in hand-polished stones. One brother is in charge of the mining, exporting and sales. The other brother manages the lapidary in Lima, Peru. The business sells exclusively at gem shows in France, Germany and the United States.

I first met the owner of the mine and lapidary at the 2014 Tucson Gem Show. At that time, he was set up with a single table and the only major Gem Show he attended was in Tucson. While most lapidaries sell their polished stones in pre-packaged bags by the pound or kilo, this seller allowed me to cherry pick through his stock and buy only the best. Since then, his spot in Tucson has expanded to four tables under a tent and he now sells at two of the major European shows. It has been fun to watch our businesses grow. Every Tucson Show, we go out to dinner and eat Peruvian food together.

Septarian Nodule Healing, Mineralogy, and History

Published July 2015  •  Updated February 2024  •  Read Time: 5 minutes
Septarian Nodule is a fascinating sedimentary rock that was formed during the time of the dinosaurs.  It is a combination of several minerals, including Aragonite, Barite, Betonite and Calcite.  The most famous specimens come from Madagascar and Utah, USA.  Both deposits look very similar with a vivid yellow entwined with grey and brown.  But stones in other deposits have a different coloring, such as black and orange.  Because of its scaly and cracked appearance, it is sometimes marketed as “Dragon Stones”, a name that dates back to a Malagasy legend that dragons once roamed the area.  Septarian Nodule is a stone of patience, purpose and confidence. Tumbled Septarian Nodule

What You’ll Receive: 1 Stone - 100% natural Septarian Nodule

Selection Process: The stone I select for you will be carefully chosen for its beauty and appeal. If combined with other stones, I always take time to choose stones that look and feel good together.

Polishing Method: Polished by hand; small pieces of the matrix rock are knocked off during the tumbling process leaving scratches and tiny cavities. Each stone is unique and minor variations are what makes them beautiful.

    Thank you. All are beautiful!!

  3. Deborah D. (California)

Just a tiny bit disappointed in the septarian. Only because it’s one of my favorite stones and it’s much darker and less defined as I expected. Still worthy of five stars, I love Moonrise stones (my green apatite is awesome.) This is a great shop and Julie is fantastic to deal with! I’m just VERY picky, lol.

  4. Raina B. (New Mexico) (verified owner)

Arrived swiftly and safely – and sparkly as always! Thank you, again, for all your positive energy in choosing stones for me. I always appreciate it. I’m thankful to have a beautiful and ethical rock collection!

  5. Jennifer S (Colorado) (verified owner)

I received my crystals and of course I love them! The septarian is a bit different than thr type I typically see (more brown and metallic, less calcite), but is still wonderful. I love the little lightning bolt running through it.

  6. Kristin J. (Pennsylvania) (verified owner)

Very beautiful!! . I’ve never seen septarian like this before. I love it!

  7. Danielle C. (California) (verified owner)

Such a unique and beautiful tumble. Thank you!
