Healing Properties of Thulite

Spiritual: Thulite is a joyful stone that reminds us that all the pleasures of life are proof that the Divine loves us and wants us to be happy! It encourages us to be more spontaneous, creative, and open to adventure. Thulite opens the heart to unconditional love and makes us more generous in giving love and more gracious when receiving love. It reminds us that we ARE our Highest Self, we just forget to act like it sometimes, and can become addicted to staying small. Thulite whispers sweetly that all we need to do is step back into the Light and just BE. Thulite gives us courage and strength so we can follow our heart and find our bliss. Thulite is attuned to the Sacral, Solar Plexus, Heart, and Throat Chakras and is linked to the astrological signs of Taurus, Gemini. It is connected to the elements of Water and Wind and vibrates to the number 5.

Emotional: Thulite encourages us to embrace our sensual and romantic sides. When we feel positive emotions, Thulite encourages us to live them to the fullest and enjoy every second. However, when faced with negative emotions, Thulite helps us to resist the urge to become overly dramatic or bogged down. It helps us to take life in stride, with a smile on our face and a kind word on our lips. Thulite gently removes negative vibrations from our emotional body and encourages us to see the silver lining in dark, stormy clouds. It strengthens our sense of empathy and our ability to relate to other people. Thulite also helps us to see our own beauty, both inner and outer, and to be self-confident without becoming arrogant or vain.

Mental: Thulite sparks our curiosity for the world around us. It encourages us to ask more questions, to do our own research, to experiment, and to invent. Thulite helps us to focus on solving problems, rather than bemoaning their existence. Lending us its happy energy, Thulite reminds us that every problem has a solution and that given proper attention nothing is impossible. Thulite also aids in self-reflection and the quest for self-knowledge. It helps us to examine our own dualities and to view ourselves both logically and lovingly. When faced with an aspect of ourselves that we don’t like, Thulite helps us figure out how to change and become the kind of person that we can admire.

Physical: Thulite is recommended for when we are faced with a healthcare challenge that triggers us emotionally.  If we feel weak or exhausted, Thulite gives us strength and courage to go on.  If we are highly-stressed, Thulite keeps us focused on self-care and problem-solving.  Thulite is especially good for helping us deal with fertility issues and anything related to the sexual and reproductive systems.  It helps us to ask questions, be open to a variety of healthcare options and to stay hopeful throughout it all.  Thulite is also an excellent talisman for the keeping the physical heart healthy and the digestive track working smoothly.

Mineral Family: Thulite is a Silicate mineral. Silicate minerals form the largest family of minerals, including more than 25% of all known minerals and 40% of all common minerals. In addition to being a major part of the Earth’s crust, Silicate minerals have also been found on the moon and in meteorites. Silicates are minerals which contain the elements Silicon (a light gray shiny metal) and Oxygen (a colorless gas). Together, these two elements form a tetrahedron – a shape similar to a pyramid – with a Silicon atom in the center and Oxygen atoms at each of the four corners. These tetrahedra connect with other chemical structures, in six different ways, to form various minerals and rocks. There are six main groups of Silicate minerals, and these main groups are further subdivided into secondary subdivisions, such as Quartz and Feldspar. Thulite belongs to the sorosilcate family, in which two tetrahedral groups share a single oxygen molecule. Thulite is a form of Zoisite and is closely related to the precious blue/purple gemstone Tanzanite.

Thulite gemFormation: Thulite is the pink manganese-rich variety of Zoisite. It can be found in the veins and fracture fillings of many different types of rocks. Thulite is pink, but many examples of it also have green areas, which is the more typical shade of Zoisite. It is often also mottled with white Calcite.

Mining: Thulite is a secondary stone found in many types of rocks. Most of the time, the Thulite is low-grade quality, but on rare occasions gem-quality crystals are found.

Enhancements: All Thulites are fully natural and have been enhanced only by tumbling, cutting, and polishing.

History of Thulite

Thulite is a relatively “new” crystal to the metaphysical community and so was not included in any ancient or medieval lapidaries, texts which describe crystals and their powers. Thulite was first documented in 1820 in the small village of Sauland, Norway. It was found in a gravel mine located between two small farms. There are no known legends directly associated with this stone, and its healing properties are still being explored.

Thulite was named after Thule, a legendary place in the far north of Europe, beyond the borders of the known world. Sometimes depicted as an island, it was listed on medieval maps as Ultima Thule, Latin for “Furthest Island.” Thule has been variously linked to Greenland, Iceland, Orkney Islands, Norway, and Shetland Islands, as well as other remote locations.

Close-up of the Carta Marina Map by Olaus Magnus (1539). Thule is spelled ‘Tile,’ the Medieval Latin form, and is located near the Faroese Islands. The monsters near the island were supposedly seen in the area in 1537.

References to Thule date as far back as the ancient Greek geography, On the Ocean, written by Pytheas and describing his travels in 330-320 BCE. Thule was later referenced by virtually every major ancient and medieval geographer. Today, Thule lends its name to several locations in Greenland, Iceland, the Sandwich Islands, Scotland, as well as a section of Mammoth Cave in Kentucky, USA. In addition to having the stone, Thulite, named after it, Thule also gave its name to Thulium, a rare and expensive element, occupying the 69th position on the Periodic Table.

Sourcing Relationship

I have been doing business with this source since 2014.  They are the oldest tumbling company in the world and have more varieties, in more sizes, than any other known source.  The company started in California in the 1950s and was eventually bought by a British immigrant who had young sons.  Eventually the company moved to South Africa in order to be closer to the source of their best-selling stone and to have the legal rights to export it.  The company is now run by the sons and their childhood best friend.

The current owners visit many small and industrial-size mines personally.  For artisanal-mined deposits in sub-Sahara Africa, the owners work with Gem Dealers who deal directly with the part-time miners.  The majority of these Gem Dealers are women.  Some, but not all, of their stones are labeled with country-of-origin.  For those that aren’t, I ask the owners directly.  As I’ve learned more about mining practices in individual countries, I have become increasingly selective about what I will purchase from them.  However, they remain my preferred source for most of the stones I sell from sub-Sahara Africa.
